There is something hard-hitting about the first look of the series 24; it was the kind of trailer that makes you want to wait for the show to premiere. The last time I felt this way was when Satyamev Jayate was to be aired. The best thing about 24 is that it promises a possibility of being a fresh break from regular soap operas that we usually find as our only option. It has rightfully created the excitement that a show belonging to the genre of crime-thriller should.
The Cast and Creative Team
The show is an adaptation of an american drama series of the same name. The Hindi version has been written by Rensil D’Silva of Rang De Basanti fame and Bhavani Iyer of Guzarish fame. It is being directed by Abhinay Deo, best known for Delhi Belly and is being produced by Anil Kapoor Films. The creative team in itself comes across as an assurance to the show’s character and credibility.
The show has terrorism as its backdrop and mainly traces the working of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Country in foiling an alleged terrorist attack. The title 24 refers to the 24 hours in which the story unfolds. Anil Kapoor is playing the protagonist of the show and his character is based on Jack Bauer’s character from the American version. Personally to me, the show has been such an attraction firstly for its rich and varied cast and secondly for the kind of thrill that it promises. A show that manages to bring together Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher, Anil Kapoor, Tisca Chopra, Mandira Bedi amongst others has got to be good. The amalgamation of their magnetism will be interesting to watch out for. Mandira Bedi has been missed on television after her ‘Shaanti’ days and I am hopeful that the show provides enough grit to her character to justify her acting calibers.
The first-look impression
Instinctively, it feels like a great start. 24 if executed well will be introducing a new chapter all together in the Indian Entertainment Industry. It holds the chance of actually covering the gap between TV and cinema. While it is a common sight these days to see Bollywood stars on television yet these appearances have mostly been on reality shows. I think it is path breaking that these stars have decided to break norms and come forward to be part of a television-series. It also promises the introduction of the concept of “seasons” in our shows. More importantly it will bring to the Indian audience something beyond the Saas-Bahu sagas and reality shows. In a detailed and interesting interview, Anil Kapoor went so far as to say that 24 might revolutionize Indian television.
I don’t wish to give out any warnings about where the show could go wrong. Call me biased if you want, but the team of 24 has some of my favorite actors, writers and directors from the film fraternity. And it’s a delight to watch them all come together and decide to create the kind of magic youngsters yearn for. The success of this show will decide the occurrence of other such endeavors in the future. However, the very appearance of such an attempt shows that we are maturing as an audience and our sensibilities are at the cusp of a defining moment.
