Rao Maldeo Singh Rathore was Akbar’s Father-in-law & Grandfather-in-law of Maharana Pratap. Know the family connection of Marwar’s Rao Maldeo Singh

Various Moslem rulers invaded the Rajputana – from the Afghans, Turks, Uzbeks to the people of the Timur dynasty i.e. Mughals. However, you will be surprise to know that despite being very much different from one another, they still have some or the other connection between them.

Yes, there is a common linkage that connects to all the different dynasties ruling in the 15th and 16th century Rajputana. Yes, the name that binds them all is none other than “Rao Maldeo Rathore” of Marwar, the character recently introduced in Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap on Sony TV

Rao Maldeo Rathore of Marwar – The Man With The Daughter Advantage!

A scion of the Rathore clan of Marwar (present Jodhpur), he ruled till 1562 until he became the victim of patricide. Born in the year 1911 to Rao Ganga and his first wife, he became a ruler of Marwar in the year 1532. He unlike other rulers of Marwar tried to expand his kingdom up till Gujarat in the west, Hissar in the east and Sindh in the north. However, in 1543, Maldeo Rathore lost his capital to Sher Shah Suri and later Marta as well as Ajmer to Akbar in 1558.

So, strange was his plans and associations that he never thought twice, before giving his daughters to others in the name of matrimonial alliances. Yes, you heard it right – Although Raja Bharmal was the first person to give his daughter to a Mughal prince, the first person to give the daughter to a Moslem ruler was Rao Maldeo Rathore.

The Family Structure of Maldeo Rathore

Rao Maldeo had 15 sons and 23 daughters from his 26 wives. In addition, he had 10 more sons from his concubine Tipu Paswan and other court singers. His third daughter Rajkumari Kankavati Baiji Lal Sahiba was married to Mahmud III, the king of Gujarat. His 5th daughter Ratnavati Baiji Lal Sahiba was married to Haji Khan of Ajmer. Also, his 13th daughter Durgavati Lal Sahiba became the 13th wife of Raja Bhagwant Das, the brother-in-law of Emperor Akbar.

So, basically Rao Maldeo married his daughters to all his enemies – whether they were Gujarat Sultanate, Afghans, Uzbeks or Mughals. Such strange is the relation that eventually the major enemies became relatives of each other.

Rao Maldeo Even Married His Daughter to Sher Shah Suri

After Maldeo Rathore lost Jodhpur to Sher Shah Suri in the year 1543, he married his daughter Rajkumari Shri Lal Baiji Sahiba with the then Emperor of India, Sher Shah Suri. So, while Rao Maldeo’s daughter must be very young, Suri was almost 57 or 58 when the marriage took place in 1544. Unfortunately, this daughter became a widow soon because hardly a year later (1545) Sher Shah Suri expired. She was Rao Maldeo’s 14th daughter. His another daughter Jasoda Baiji Lal Sahiba was married to Khan Mahmud Daulat Khan.

Sher Shah Suri & Akbar Became Brother In Laws

Rao Maldeo’s 23rd and last daughter Rukmavati Sahiba from his concubine Tipu Paswan was married to Mughal Emperor in the year 1581. So, while Rao Maldeo became the father-in-law of both Akbar and Sher Shah Suri, they became brother in laws of each other. However, Sher Shah Suri was already dead by then.

Maharana Pratap & Akbar Become Relatives – Thanks to Rao Maldev Rathore

Now, Rao Maldev is highly assumed as Phool Kanwar’s grandfather. So, going by this connection – Akbar eventually becomes Uncle of both, Maharana Pratap as well as Phool Kunwar. How? Ah, because Maharana Pratap married Phool Kunwar and Akbar married Phool Kunwar’s aunt Rukmavati. (Though I don’t think so there would be much age difference between Rukmavati and Phool Kunwar)
