Anupama has released the interview on her Youtube channel where we see her chitchatting with Anushka on almost all the topics from drinking, Hindi Films and even about her boyfriend Cricketer Virat Kohli.
Here we will share all the exclusive things that Anushka said about ‘Sexism in Bollywood’when asked about Bollywood’s Treatment of Women:
Anushka Sharma on the Salary Gap in Bollywood amongst the Actor and Actress
“If there is an actor at the same stature as me, who would be able to bring in only that much money to a movie, he would still be paid more than me because he is a guy. Nobody is even thinking about it. It is just ingrained.”
On Why Actress are Speaking about the Wage Gap in Bollywood
“A few years ago, when people were being asked this question, they were being diplomatic about it. Today we’re talking about it because in all walks of life, women are earning money and the power game has shifted.”
On Different Wages for a Male and a Female Newcomer
“A female newcomer and a male newcomer will get paid different amounts of money. You’re a newcomer, nobody knows who you are, man or woman doesn’t matter. But you’re going to get paid different money.”
On How Men is Given More Preference Every time
Anushka Sharma explains how she never experienced gender inequality until she became an actress. It all started from the very first day. She further explains that we may talk about gender discrimination in rural India but it is very apparent in Bollywood. Here’s what she quoted –
“You always feel the discrimination. It is not just with the money, it is also in general. If you are on an outdoor schedule, you know that the guy is going to get the better room. Why does that need to happen?”
Anushka Sharma on the Roles Offered to Women in Bollywood
“Girls are just expected to be good-looking. Look nice and just be interesting enough for a guy to be interested in you in a film. Women doing films together – they only come together in a film when there’s a guy involved, if there is a love triangle or something like that”
Anushka Sharma on Actress being labelled as Bitch
“If you’re asking for something that you think you deserve, you’re a bitch. “She has an attitude problem. Isko kitna attitude hai”! We aren’t dumb. We haven’t come this far in life being floozies. All the actresses in the industry are smart are smart. Obviously they’re not being unreasonable. But if they’re making a suggestion, they’re told they’re being “difficult”.
On Actress Speaking Their Mind in Hindi Film Industry
People tell me you are like an activist. So I say, Am I an activist? Why Am I an activist? They say, because you are saying these kinds of things – that makes you an activist. I think people don’t like women with guts in this industry.
On Ageism in Bollywood that is only Gender Specific
“Men can work as long as they want to even when they’ve aged. They’re still amazing and cool. And I have no problem with that. But why is that women are only okay when they’re “young and desirable”? There’s a sexual connotation attached.”
On Why Pay More to Men
“It is just assumed that men need more money. Maybe people think men need to run families and women are being looked after. But maybe I don’t want to get married. May be I do. It doesn’t matter. It is irrelevant. It’s a value I’m talking about.”
A Request to the Industrywallahas by Anushka Sharma
“I’m very blessed. God has given me a lot. It is not out of greed that I want more money. I’m just saying value me. At the end of the day, you want respect. That’s all you want. When you pay me less money (than my male counterpart), you are telling me I’m not as valuable.”
