Quotable Quote: “I am the only actor who has gone out of industry and made a comeback. Mr Bachchan was only one before me to have made a comeback.”
There was a time when Arshad Warsi’s financial standing was dangerously hovering between imminent bankruptcy and absolute financial disaster. He did all sorts of odd jobs to keep himself alive on the streets of Mumbai like selling lipstick and nail polish in buses between Borivelli and Bandra. When Arshad was offered Rs 1,000 to be part of a dance troupe of Akbar Sami’s, he grabbed this opportunity. In 1991, he won the Indian dance championship and in 1992 the World dance championships in the modern jazz category in London.
Back in Mumbai, Arshad started a dance studio called Awesome. Film-offers came by naturally. He assisted Mahesh Bhatt and also choreographed some shows for Bharat Dabholkar and also title song for the film ‘Roop Ki Rani, Choron Ka Raja’ of Boni Kapoor in the year 1993.
Catapulted into the field of choreography, he has become a familiar face in the English-theatre scene in the city of dreams. Soon he became a much sought-after figure. Arshad could have been just another dancer in this huge industry. But, destiny had other plans. With Amitabh Bacchchan’s ABCL production film ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ a new journey began for him. He worked in a number of acclaimed films that unfortunately did not do well. Foremost amongst these is “Sehar” and then “Kabul Express”.His role in “Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II” was also praised a lot. After Munnabhai, Arshad became circuit and circuit became the synonymous for comedy. Three Golmaal films and Ishqiya all proved his mettle. But despite the accolades, Warsi still don’t have that greed for success.
Warsi hosted a popular award show Sabse Favourite Kaun for STAR Gold Bigg Boss, Season 1, which was aired on Sony. He was also co-host of a dance show Razzmatazz on channel Zee TV. He has a done a small cameo in a television show called Ishaan.
With Jolly LLB, Arshad Warsi scored his first success as a solo lead. In an industry that prefers to keep its actors totally separate from its stars, the rise of someone like Arshad Warsi provides a rare glimmer of hope.
“Calling Mr Joe,” directed by Sameer Tiwari, Dedh Ishqiya by Abhishek Chaubey and Chambal Safari are some of his upcoming films. If you can’t wait so long, go and grab the ticket of Rabba Main Kya Karoon which is set to release on August 2nd.
