The greatest tribute to Narendra Dabholkar will be if Govt passes his ‘anti superstition and black magic bill’ in Maharashtra that he so passionately pursued to be passed till the time the killers bullets silenced this great soul.

The Killing of Narendra Dabholkar in Pune is cause for huge alarm in our society and Nation. Mr. Dabholkar had been a crusader against superstition and other blind beliefs. He had been a pioneer and was trying to bring ‘anti superstition and black magic bill’ in Maharashtra and to get it passed by the Maharashtra Govt. For his crusade he had been at the receiving end of many right wing fanatic organizations and had faced considerable flak over last few years.

Narendra Dabholkar Assassination of Social Activist Narendra Dabholkar

Mr. Dabholkar had bravely faced all the threats that came his way but unfortunately he was silenced by some mad killers while he was talking his morning walk in Pune.  Mr. Dabholkars killing has shaken all the rationalist and social reformers in Maharashtra. In spite of the threats to his life Mr. Narendra Dabholkar did not ask for Police protection.

Mr. Narendra Dabholkar was a medical Doctor and had a thriving practice in Satara district of Maharashtra but he left his medical practice to work for the social activism.  He associated himself with movements for eradication of superstition i.e., Akhil Bharatiya Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti ABANS. He got separated from ABANS and founded Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti i.e. Committee for Eradication of Superstition of Maharashtra He is the founding member of Parivartan, a de-addiction centre located in Satara. It’s a cause of huge alarm to see the growing intolerance in our society. Mr. Dabholkars killing is a huge blow to social movement and activist in Maharashtra

Maharashtra is a land of social reformers like Tilak, Jyotiba Phule and B.R.Ambedkar and it will not be deterred by killing of Mr. Narendra Dabholkar but It’s time for all of us to think about what kind of future do we look forward to? Do we want an India that has Nirmal Baba and Commercials selling Amulets, or Gems that are used for superstition on Television? Or we want a Nation that cuts across such superstitions and beliefs and rises above caste and religious barriers.

When we talk about development and economic growth of our country? How can out Nation grow when a huge number of our population still believes in such outdated superstitious practices? We have got all the education yet we still put lemon and chilies on our cars or hang the black dolls on our doors? Unfortunately our Nation when it boasts of science and technology and all the progress is still is a very superstitious Nation and with the killing of individual like Dabholkar our Nation has suffered a great jolt.

The greatest tribute to Narendra Dabholkar will be if Govt passes his ‘anti superstition and black magic bill’ in Maharashtra that he so passionately pursued to be passed till the time the killers bullets silenced this great soul.
