‘Liquid’, ‘Chatur’, ‘D.J’ ‘Bunny’; Do these names ring a bell in your mind? These are some of the characters in Hindi Films which managed to win the hearts of millions and attain a cult status over the years.
The common factor in all these characters is the fact that they all have been for on a common audience; the Youth
And that seems to the latest trend in Bollywood, just like every Friday a new star is born and a superstar tries its luck at the box office, film makers search for that one formula which is a sure shot gold at the ticket counter. And the latest favorite seems to be films that are centered on the Youth brigade of India.
Dil Chahta hai; a favorite for many of the movie goers was an important landmark for Hindi Films as it opened the doors for a new kind of cinema; movies which are youthful, urban, peppy which was something Bollywood had portrayed earlier in movies like DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota hai but DCH showed a new direction to it and suddenly youth centric movies became cool
Over the years; Bollywood has used this formula and churned many films like ‘Hum Tum, ‘Salaam Namaste’, ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’, ‘MP3’, ‘Rang De Basanti’, Wake Up Sid, F.A.L.T.U. have not only had a yuppie star cast but have also reflected the culture and trends of what’s hot.
The last few years this trend took a whole new leap with the success of low-budget comedy ‘Pyaar ka Punchnama’ which not only managed to win the critics but also wooed the audience to the theatres. This not only increased the credibility and box office value of the genre but also attracted many eyeballs to the product.
Bollywood has been flooded with a spate of films made with India’s youth in mind. Big Production houses who have always preferred family drama and romantic films to their liking, have accepted the new trend. Films like ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Luv Ka The End’ and ‘Mujhse Fraandship Karoge’ and ‘Shaitan’ is a proof that Bollywood today have realized that youth is the real ‘Junta’ for cinema today
Every Friday seals a deal for a film, and youth centric films have been having a Good Friday’ lately. A close look at the numbers reflects the same; films like ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, ‘3 Idiots’ have ruled the roost having crossed over 100 crores at the box office.
Trade Pundits suggest the reason for this is the advancement in technology; today even a 14 year old has a reach to the world, knowing the latest happening in the world and creates their own choices in everything albeit movies too, this creates a big audience for Bollywood film makers, and the production houses have realized that a big money cow is waiting to e en cashed here.
The industry’s new youth icon Ranbir Kapoor’s latest offering; ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ which has been the biggest grosser this year so far with over a 100 crores in two weeks is a big tip of the hat to this. With movies like ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ and the recently released ‘Fukrey’; it’s a clear sign that the formula of youth oriented flicks is here to stay.
