The Congress has invited parties from abroad but not the PM and BJP for Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations. Is this is a tit for tat situation?

No Invite to PM Modi for Nehru Birthday Celebrationnarendra modi CONGRESS PLAYING TIT FOR TAT?

  1. It would seem that the Congress is still offended by the perceived affront from PM Narendra Modi. The 30th anniversary of the assassination of Smt Indira Gandhi coincided with the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel and saw the PM flagging off a run for unity in the name of Sardar Patel rather than visiting the Indira Gandhi memorial Shakti Sthal.
  2. The PM’s tribute to India’s first and only woman PM consisted of a single tweet; something that did not go down very well with the Congress. Now it would seem that the Congress is busy playing a game of tit for tat.
  3. The birth anniversary India’s first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, will be observed on 14th November 2014 by the Congress. This will consist of an international conference to commemorate the leader’s 125th birth anniversary. Invitations have been issued to as many as 15 political parties from India and from abroad.
  4. No invitation has been issued to PM Narendra Modi or his party the BJP however. According to the Congress spokesperson, invitations for the 2 day event have been issued to all “likeminded political parties”. The fact that invitations have been issued to other political parties is being seen as an attempt to reach out to regional players after the Congress’s worst ever showing in any Indian election. 5. The Communist Party of China and several other world leaders have been invited and have confirmed attendance; however the BJP and its representatives will be conspicuous by their absence. The purported reason for this given by Congress spokes person Anand Sharma is this: “We have not given any invitation to the PM. We have invited all those who truly believe in democracy and the ideals of Nehru.” (Source HT)
  6. This instance seems to be yet another example of the Congress and the BJP fighting to claim the legacy of India’s past leaders. While on the birth anniversary the Congress was at pains to point of the fact that Sardar Patel was a Congressman, now the two parties are bickering over Nehru’s legacy.
  7. If the Congress was opportunistic in claiming Patel’s legacy, the ruling BJP is as quick to lay claim to the legacy of Chacha Nehru. The BJP plans its own celebration to mark Nehru’s anniversary. Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be in charge of the birth anniversary celebrations which will further the government’s pet cleanliness agenda as well.
  8. So now, thanks to the BJP, Bal Diwas (Children’s Day) will now be Bal Swachhta Diwas (Children’s Cleanliness Day). The Bal Swachhta Mission will be celebrated in schools this year and PM Modi wants to extend this to the entire year to celebrate the former PM’s 125th anniversary – with the year of Bal Swachhta.
