Director Ayan Mukerji’s romantic love story ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani‘ has raked up Rs.62.11 crore in the opening weekend. Actress Deepika Padukone who reunited with ex flame Ranbir Kapoor after Bachna Ae Hasino admits that the phenomenal opening surpassed their expectations.
Well, DP may have been surprised, I was not. Looking at the cerebral power the average Indian cinema goer exudes, this one was sure to hit the 100 crore mark. If it had tanked, it would have been a jolt to my judgment of how Indians perceive cinema. Nevertheless, I was left bamboozled on one account. YJHD gave a Deepika Padukone I am not quite accustomed to.
I remembered her face from her close up ad. So, when she first appeared in the ‘Om Shanti Om’, she looked fresh especially coming out of from a toothpaste commercial. Her characteristic wrist wave left us all star gazed. Then, as a headstrong taxi driver in ‘Bachna Ae Hasino’ she oozed irresistible charm. One could swear by ‘Khuda Jane’, the couple looked as beautiful as the picturesque locations.
Then something went horribly wrong for the model turned actress. Her double role was as pathetic as the film ‘CC2C’. Love Aaj Kal, no matter how successful it was, did a great disservice to the eldest daughter of one of India’s most prolific Badminton player. It typecast her. She became the first choice of any role that had no meat in it. All that she was supposed to play was a glamour doll. Housefull, ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’, ‘Break Ke Baad, Desi Boyz’, ‘Cocktail’ and ‘Race 2’ all roles were cut from the same cloth. Erratic attempts of showcasing her acting prowess in films like Lafangey Parinde and ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’ went unnoticed. She kept on hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons. She became a mere arm candy of any handsome successful hunk, a genre Anushka Sharma is dangerously heading towards. Jokes on Deepika Padukone jinx also were hugely circulated in the social networking sites with the recent being KKR’s poor performance that was credited to her association with SRK.
As Naina in YJHD, she reminds of Naina (Preity Zinta) from ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’. As a understated nerd in the first half, she dazzled. As a understanding love struck girl, she appeared calm. I was expecting a often seen DP avatar taking cue from songs like Dilliwali girlfriend, Balam Pichkari and Badtameez Dil but fortunately, this time around she brought a whiff of fresh air. The role was not exceptional one but it sure was different. To leave the garb of a diva and play a poised mature girl, DP made me believe there’s still acting hidden under that flawless skinny body. With Chennai Express and Ram Leela, I am simply curious to see if this girl has anything mote to offer or YJWD was a mere fluke. As for now, Welcome Back Deepika Padukone.
