In Brief

“This short, frail looking guy with Sonam Kapoor? They don’t look like a couple. How could anybody cast them together?” I happened to eavesdrop on this conversation. Two months  later – My facebook wall, twitter account, all seemed to be flooded with praise for Dhanush.

With Kolaveri D the prince of southern cinema  became a household name across the country, but with Raanjhana, he turned into a phenomenon. Dhanush in Raanjhanaa was not accidental. An introvert, humble guy in real life – just being cast in the lead role, did not make him a hero – his screen presence did. Is it too much of a stretch to say that it was Kolaveri D that laid the foundation for popularity of videos like Gangnam style?

While he has been just recognized for his role in Raanjhanaa , he is won many accolades in the past for his role in Tamil films.

For Aadukalam (Arena) in 2011, Dhanush won the National Award for Best Actor. Mayakkam Enna (What is This Hypnotism) in 2011: his role seems to be at par with the one in Aadukalam. Pudhupettai (Survival of the Fittest) in 2006, Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam (Those were the Best Days) in 2005, Pollaadhavan (Ruthless Man) in 2007, Kadhal Kondein (I Fell in Love), 2003 are those films that made him grow as an actor and as a star in the industry.

Dhanush had his fair share of misses as well. While some of his films may have missed (in 2009-2010 he had a lean period), Dhanush never had the same problem with songs and lyrics.

Once Dhanush had mentioned that guys like him are not liked instantly, that it takes time for people to get used to  actors like him and to fall for them. So true. We fell flat for you Dhanush!! Agreed, he has unconventional looks but, Dhanush has emerged as a new kind of hero, breaking the stereotypes. With no six pack abs and dark complexion, Dhanush has a charming personality. He stands in the row of our new superstars, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Irfan Khan.

A National Award winning actor and a Filmfare Award winner, Dhanush is now one of India’s biggest international icons. Eager to kick start an innings in the Hindi cinema industry, Dhanush who began his career with a film ‘Thulluvadho Illamai’ directed by his father, now aspires to work with the likes of  Anurag Kashyap, Abhishek Kapoor, Rajkumar Hirani and Anurag Basu, . His latest Tamil film, Mariyaan , is still creating waves. His fans will see him in  Aanand L Rai’s next film.

Watch out, Dhanush The southern sensation, Dhanush The Dhamaka, is set to thrill the Hindi cinema.
