Let the members of ICTL (Indian Club of Trump Lovers) speak about the attack on Indians on US soil!
According to a Quartz Media Report, on November 10, 2016, in his acceptance speech, US president-elect Donald J. Trump had made a pledge of unity for all Americans and also, promised to be a leader for “all Americans.”
However, what were happening among thes die-hard supporters of Trump was a different story. Even as Trump was speaking, one person in the audience yelled “Hang Obama,” and online commentators spewed a steady stream of racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic messages on a YouTube LiveStream, directed to “Anti-whites,” “Killery,” and “Jews in Congress.”
It is important to realize that Trump’s victory was based on 279 Electoral College votes and it was without taking the popular vote. Droves of Trump supporters were harassing minorities, and calling for more organized white supremacy.
In the Utah High Schools Latino students were bullied. According to a Fox News Channel, one student whose parents were Mexican immigrants was told, “You wetbacks need to go back to Mexico.”
A local NBC affiliate reported that the supporters of Donald Trump were canvassing with a vitriolic message : “Get off the fence, whitey, and join the only group that has ever stood for the white man,” they read. “Black radicals have reverted back to savages and more Muslims arrive daily.” One Afghan immigrant from Nashville, Tennessee, said her former neighbor, and mother’s best friend for 10 years, sent her a message telling her to “go back to where she came from.” Trump supporters were openly vowing to rid the US of non-whites (referred to as “muds”) in America entirely.
Against this backdrop, the Hindu Sena, an Indian fringe group was celebrating Trump’s victory in New Delhi ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th US president. It was so distressing to watch the National president of Hindu Sena, Vishnu Gupta, drawing, smudging or painting the tilak on the forehead.of a Trump’s poster at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The Tilak is a Hindu religious mark, a set of red lines or dots symbolic of the spiritual third eye of Lord Shiva. They also offered sweets to Trump’s poster and raised slogans in his honor. Gupta said the rise of right wing leaders in the world will bring an end to Islamic Extremism.
“Tomorrow, there is the swearing-in ceremony, so a day before, we have anointed (symbolically) him here. These four photos of Donald Trump, (Vladimir) Putin, (Narendra) Modi and Israel’s (Benjamin) Netanyahu are group through which we want to send a message that there is a rise of right wing leaders in the world and Islamic extremists should either disappear or this group will finish them,” Gupta said. This group was deadly fascinated with Trump as he had positioned himself as the answer to growing Islamic radicalism across the world.
The radical fringe of Indian majority, the pseudo-nationalists in India and the United States sees Trump as an embodiment of Revenge and an ‘Incarnate Avenger of Assumed and Real Wrongs of Indian History.’ On this globe, after the United States, one can find the most passionate followers of Trump on Indian soil. According to Shre Shalabh Kumar, the founding chairman of the ‘Republican Hindu Coation’ of US:
“Mr. Trump is all about development, development, development; prosperity, prosperity, prosperity; tremendous job growth. And at the same time, he recognizes the need to control the borders.”
It is also a strange coincidence and a piquant scenario that many of Mr. Trump’s biggest Hindu supporters are also some of Mr. Modi’s most ardent backers. The reality is that Trump’s hardline rhetoric towards Muslims is the most welcome development for the right wing followers in India. According to Gupta, the terrorists will now be hunted everywhere in the world.
Unfortunately, the ground realities at Ground Zero speak a different story.
Apart from the anticipated challenges that the Indian students aspiring to take admission in American Universities are going to face and the difficulties for Indians in finding and retaining the job, the string of attacks on Indians in America is the most painful development – a new bitter reality!
After Trump victory, the inspired followers of Trump started the new phase with the killing of an Indian techie in Kansas and the latest is the attack on a Sikh man outside his house in Kent, Washington. It is the third incident of suspected hate crime against an Indian in the United States in a span of 10 days. In another attack, 39-year-od Deep Rai was shot at by an unidentified person who allegedly yelled “Go Back to Your Own Country”. The attack on Rai comes barely 48 hours after an Indian store owner was shot dead outside his house in South Carolina in a suspected case of hate crime.
In the recent spate of attacks, Harnish Patel of Lancaster in South Carolina, was killed, and Srinivas Kuchibhotla was murdered on February 22 in Olathe, Kansas. Another Indian, Alok Madasani, who was injured in the Olathe attack. Fortunately he had survived. In the February 22 Kansas incident, an American, Ian Grillot, who tried to stop the shooting, was also shot and injured. A white Navy veteran Adam Purinton, 51, was arrested and charged with murder in the killing of Kuchibhotla. Purinton reportedly said that he had shot two Iranians.
In his address to the joint session of the Congress, Donald Trump had said: “Last week’s shooting in Kansas city reminds us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms.” At a news conference in Washington, the Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said he had discussed the Kent incident with administration and Congressional leaders during his visit. “What we heard from very high-level, cabinet level that we should regard this as an act of an individual,” he said. “The American justice system was at work, it could bring the perpetrators of this act to justice. It is being prosecuted as a hate crime.”
We’ve not heard much about these attacks from the Indian Club of Trump Lovers.
