TV actor and personality Drashti Dhami has won the Best Actress Award at the recently concluded Star Guild Awards for her role in Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon. She won the award jointly with Ankita Lokhande of Pavitra Rishta fame. One of the most recognisable faces on Indian TV, Drashti Dhami is also one of the most popular TV actresses today. Hers is the face that millions watch every evening on TV as they get their daily fix of melodrama.
Drashti Dhami – The Beginning
Born and brought up in Mumbai, Drashti Dhami hails from what she terms as a “conservative Guajarati family”. The 29 year’s first foray into TV was via music videos and advertisements – she appeared in TV ads such as Horlicks, Chevrolet Spark, Reliance, VIP and many others. She was also a dance instructor at some point in her career and her dancing abilities have stood her in good stead later in her career.
One of the first music video gigs where she got noticed was the music video of Siaya Dil Mein Aana Re (the music video may seem rather tacky now, but I seem to remember it was quite the thing when it was first launched). She also featured in other music videos like “Humko Aaj Kal Hai Intezar” (remix), “Nachle Soniye Tu” and “Teri meri nazar ki dori”.
TV acting debut
Drashti Dhami made her TV debut as Dr. Muskaan Chadda in Dill Mill Gayye and instantly caught the fancy of the nation with her portrayal of a medical intern (later doctor) in the serial. At the time “RaMusk” was the term coined by fans to describe her very popular pairing with the character of Dr Rahul Grewal in that serial.
Drashti Dhami was then seen in Geet – Hui Sabse Parayi – the archetypal story of the Indian girl who is forced to act against her own wishes and to marry in keeping with her family’s wishes; a young girl who is then exploited by the man she is forced to marry. She was nominated in the Rangeela Category at the Big TV Awards in 2011 for her role in the serial. She along with her co-star Gurmeet Choudhary also won the award for Best Celebrity Jodi at the Zee Gold Awards in 2011.
Her most popular and successful role till date has been her portrayal of the title character Madhubala in the ongoing serial Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon which began in May 2012. The, serial which is supposed to be a tribute to 100 years of Hindi Cinema, is a story that revolves around the life of a young beautician whose life changes when she meets RK (Rishabh Kundra), a superstar played by Vivan Dsena. Drishti’s role as the girl next door who is thrust into stardom by unusual circumstances, has been much appreciated, and she has now won a Best Actress Award for this portrayal of hers.
Drishti Dhami – Other Claims to Fame
Drashti Dhami found herself in illustrious company when she was named the 12th World’s Sexiest Asian Woman for 2012 by Eastern Eye – a list that contained the likes of Priyanka Chopra and many of Indian TV’s other top actresses.
Her training as a dancer and stint as dance instructor have meant that Drishti has also been much appreciated for her dancing abilities. She participated in and won Season 6 (June – September 2013) of the dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa as well, along with her dance partner choreographer Salman Yusuff Khan.
