Eid al-Adha is the festival of sacrifice in Islam. It’s said that on Allah’s command Prophet Abraham was ready to sacrifice his first born son but Abraham’s devotion changed Allah’s mind asking for one sheep instead of his son.
As calculated, quantum of 3 lakh animals accounting to the lofty amount of 300 crore would be slaughtered (sacrificed) in Kashmir. The air in Kashmir festooned joy and thrill for Kashmiris but for animals, the scenario was different, murky, in fact. 1000 trucks with livestock were imported in Kashmir for this exclusive ‘sacrificing’ festival, rather ‘murdering’.
One sheep is worth Rs 1000 and thereby, 3 lakh sheeps add up to make a total of 300 crores. On the other hand, one camel costs Rs 40,000 and according to the Islamic belief, a camel is equivalent to the sacrifice of seven people while a sheep connotes only ‘one’.
Well, in my eyes, any such celebration which spread smiles at the cost of animal’s tears is unquestionably a crime. Let’s join our hands together and stop this age-old crime, celebrated every year.
