Gurmeet Is From Bihar ~ Early Life
Since, Guru’s father was in army (retired Subehdar Major), the family shifted from one place to other. So, even though the Choudhary family hails from Bhagalpur district of Bihar, Gurmeet was brought up in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He did his schooling and even laid the foundation of his career in Jabalpur.
Ever Since He Was a Kid, He Wanted to Become an Actor
Guru was very fond of acting when he was a kid. The actor even participated in school plays. He was determined to become an actor. So, at the age of 18, he joined theatre, but reached its peak only after 5 years. To pursue his dreams, he started modeling – He won the title of Mr. Jabalpur and even participated in Mr. India contest.
His Debut Serial Was a Tamil TV Show
In year 2006, Gurmeet got his maiden role. However, it was not a Hindi TV serial but a South Indian TV show – Maayavi. The serial Maayavi down south was a huge hit. Gurmeet soon bagged few South Indian movies too after this serial. You might have not noticed, but Gurmeet also did a small role in the movie “Koi Aapsa” where he was seen as Aftab Shivdasani’s college friend along with Anita Hassanandani, Chetan Hansraj and Ali Asghar.
Mr. Prem Sagar Himself Selected Him For the Role Of Ram
Gurmeet Choudhary became a household name after he was seen in NDTV Imagine’s Ramayan. The way he got this role is quite interesting – Gurmeet was in the office of SAGARS to get some work. The moment Mr. Sagar saw Guru, he was impressed by his attractive and composed personality. Smitten by his humbleness, Mr. Sagar decided to cast Gurmeet as the Ram of the new Ramayan.
No, Gurmeet Didn’t Meet Debina on the Sets of Ramayan
It is widely assumed that Gurmeet and Debina Bonnerjee, who played the role of Sita, first met on the sets of Ramayan. However, the truth is that they both knew each other before. How? Well, Debina too was a part of Gurmeet’s Debut TV show – Maayavi. However, their love blossomed only on the sets of Ramayan.
Debina in one of the interviews said though the feeling was mutual it was Debina who said first because Gurmeet couldn’t confess even though he wanted to. The two however married in 2011. Gurmeet proposed Debina on National TV in a reality show – Pati Patni Aur Woh. They got the highest number of votes.
Gurmeet won season 5 of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and together with Debina he became the first runner up of Nach Baliye season 6. You would be shocked to know that though Guru is excellent when it comes to dancing, he isn’t a trained dancer. However, we cannot miss the fact that the actor loves dancing ever since he was a kid. He also participated in Khatron Ke Khiladi Blockbuster and was the second runner up after Rajneesh Duggal and Nikitin Dheer.
Punjabi Films and Bollywood
In the year 2011, Gurmeet bagged a role in Subash Ghai’s movie Cycle Kick. However, the movie never released. Later, he was seen in two Punjabi films – ‘Yaar Mera Rab Warga’ and ‘DDLJ – Din Dehadey Lai Jaange’ – A tribute to the original DDLJ. Recently, he finally made his Bollywood debut with Mahesh Bhatt Film Khamoshiyan.

His Favorite actor is Hrithik Roshan, and his favorite film is Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Guru’s favorite color is blue and black. Debina, however claims that his favorites keep on changing every now and then. Besides, he is trained in marital arts and love reading in free time. He has a strange obsession of sunglasses and owns a collection of the same. His grandfather called him Shashi Kapoor and that’s how he was nicknamed as Shashi. However, Debina and his friends call him Guru – well, even his fans now!
