The redoubtable Dimple Kapadia returns to the silver screen after a brief hiatus with this coming weekend’s release What the Fish – in what appears to be a madcap comedy/drama film with an ensemble cast. It should be an interesting weekend at the multiplexes, what with other releases such as Jackpot and Lucky Kabootar slated for release on Friday, 13 December 2013.

What the Fish Trailer
We see Dimple Kapadia in her avatar as the Monster Maasi in this film – she plays Sudha Mishra – a cantankerous divorcee woman in her 60’s; clearly very opinionated and set in her ways. She plans to be away from her home for a time and decides to entrust the care of her home; more particularly the care of her fish and her plants into the hands of Sumit (played by Sumit Suri).
Sumit is the fiancé of her niece and this is his chance to endear himself to his would be family. He is told to look after the house; specially the bathroom and to regularly feed the fish. No one should sleep in her bed (because she is prone to allergies) and she must find the house in the condition that she found it. Of course all manner of mayhem ensues and we see random people troop in and out the house.
A unique promotion of the film consists of a series of YouTube videos featuring Dimple as Sudha Mishra where she voices some of her strong opinions about Policemen, petrol prices, taxi wallahs, pollution, onions and even Sachin Tendulkar (he should be the leader of the nation; if that idea doesn’t appeal, Sudha Mishra is up to the job)
What the Fish Story, Plot and Music
So Sudha Mishra leaves her house – this is the first time she is doing so for so long and returns home to find that all seems to be in order. All that is, except for a howling woman in white ensconced in her bedroom.
To understand what led up to this scenario in the preceding month, we will presumably be taken to a flashback that involves Sudha’s house being used for a party, then by an eloping couple and then by a land shark as well as a Haryanvi Jaat who is also a cross dresser and Kathak dancer. A tribal Mizo family and the aforementioned woman in white are also involved in the action somehow. All will be revealed this Friday the 13th.
With songs like Mind ki Goti Jaam Hai and Babbe Mast, the music appears to be a fun, irreverent mix of some good beats and riffs. The music has a rock feel with overtones of rap and some ubiquitous pop beats.
What the Fish – Other Headlines
Actor Manjot Singh, who plays the role of Pummy in What the Fish, admits that he is better suited to ensemble movies and that it is unlikely that he will get cast as the star of a film. He reportedly enjoys working with other actors because it’s a learning experience and found that Dimple Kapadia was very down to earth to work with.
The lead actor will be having a special screening for her first ever co-star Rishi Kapoor. Since she shares a great rapport with him, she wanted him to be among the first to view her film. Also in the news for promoting the film was Poonam Pandey – reportedly the starlet who enjoys baring her all was to appear at the promo party for the film in a bikini – whatever. Hopefully the movie will be more interesting that Ms Pandey’s shenanigans.
