Our own version of the Razzies, the Golden Kelas have been around for the past few years to “celebrate the worst of Indian cinema”. Check out the nominations for the 6th Golden Kela Awards, 2014

It is the awards season and the award nominations for the worst in Indian cinema are out: Presenting the Golden Kela award nominations, where films such as Dhoom 3, Ram-Leela and other hit, mainstream films have been honoured by being nominated.

The Golden Kelas – India’s Answer to the Razzies

Hollywood’s tradition of handing out the Razzies or the Golden Raspberries to the worst films and artistes of the film industry has been around since the early 80’s. These awards are as an by way of a sarcastic comment upon what is perceived as bad cinema, and the ‘winners’ rarely if ever arrive to receive their award. Rather famously, Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock arrived to receive their respective Razzie award the same years that they also Academy Awards in the Best Actress category. This speaks of a great sense of humour and ability not to take oneself too seriously.

The Golden Kela Award

Our own version of the Razzies, the Golden Kelas have been around for the past few years; also trying to “celebrate the worst of Indian cinema”. These are presented by India’s only humour magazine Random Magazine. One wonders how many Bollywood artistes (of any) will be able to laugh at themselves and how many will arrive to receive their ‘awards’ in person.  So far Abhiskek Bachchan has accepted his award in person – for the ‘Dara Singh Award’ – which was his reward for his fake American accent in Delhi 6.

So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, this year’s nominations for the 6th Golden Kelas Awards, 2014:

Nominations for the Worst Actor 2014:

Ajay Devgn for Himmatwala, Ram Charan Teja for Zanjeer, Imran Khan for Gori Tere Pyaar mein, Aditya Roy Kapoor for Aashiqui 2, Ranvir Singh for Goliyon Ki Raas Leela…Ram Leela and Arjun Kapoor for Aurangzeb. There was some discussion about why Ranveer Singh was nominated, and the guys at Random thought that this was a deserved nomination just for Ranveer’s ghastly rendition of Gangman Style as shown in the video (and here I thought it was for the peculiar dandruff song in Ram-Leela).

The Golden Kela Nominations for the Worst Actress 2014

Shraddha Kapoor for Aashiqui 2, Priyanka Chopra for Zanjeer, Pallavi Sharda for Besharam, Sonam Kapoor for Ranjhanaa, Sonakshi Sinha for R…Rajkumar, Deepika Padukone for Chennai Express.

Golden Kela Nominations for the Worst Director

Really tough competition in this category:  Sajid Khan for Himmatwala, Rohit Shetty for Chennai Express, Rakesh Roshan for Kkrish 3, Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Ram Leela, Prabhu Deva for R…Rajkumar and Apoorva Lakhia for Zanjeer and Anand L Rai for Ranjhanaa. I had a tough time deciding how to cast my own vote; how decide between Rohit Shetty and Sajid Khan – because I couldn’t decide which movie was more difficult to sit through. I finally settled for Sajid Khan and Himmatwala.

Nominees for Worst Film of 2014

Such riches to choose from this year, thought the guys at the Random, so we have all of 8 nominees: Himmatwala, Raanjhanaa, Besharam, Ashiqui 2, Chennai Express, Ram Leela, Krish 3, Dhoom 3. There was some indignation that Dhoom 3 was also nominated – but then the film required such suspension of disbelief that I think it is rightly listed along with the other nominations – so what if it starred my favourite Khan!

These are not all the nominations – to read about more nominations and to know how to vote, The Golden Kela Award Nominations, part 2 follows after this.
