  3. The claims made by proponents of gou mutra are typically not supported by any facts, studies or research. Most depend upon certain statements made in ancient texts vy Charaka (1st-2nd century), Susruta (3rd –4th century) and Vagbhata (7th century) to support their claim.

  5. Some years ago, the RSS had announced the launch of a bovine beverage, a soft drink made from cow’s urine. Om Prakash, the head of the RSS Cow Protection Department had been reported as saying that cow urine can cure “around 70 to 80 incurable diseases like diabetes” and that it would be useful for the whole country. This product launch was supposed to be a counter to the corrupting influence of Western products such as Pepsi and Coke.
  6. The cow urine soft drink or gou mutra cola has still not materialised, however the support garnered by ideas such as this is only on the rise. The much touted benefits of drinking cow urine and basing such practice on the knowledge and wisdom of the ancients is of a piece with other tall claims made about scientific advancements by ancient India.
  7. Many claim that the “Brahma Astra” mentioned in ancient texts such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharat is proof of ancient India knowing about nuclear technology. The mentions of flying chariots must surely mean that ancient Indians had at their disposal some means of flying. The fact that there were a 100 Kaurava brothers, all born at roughly the same time is presented as proof that some form of in vitro fertilisation or method of surrogacy being available in ancient times. These ideas find a lot of takers and to be sure it can be quite tempting to believe in an ancient, lost civilization that was supremely advanced, technologically and scientifically.
  8. There are claims that Sage Karnad had conducted a “nuclear test… lakhs of years ago.” There is the claim that Karna was the product of genetic engineering. Then of course we have the famous claim about stem cell technology made by Dinanath Batra; that the technology was developed by an Indian inspired by the Mahabharat. (Source – HT)
  9. Rather than interpret myth as convenient fact and explain legend as ‘Indian science’, we would do well to recall the tenets of our Constitution, which tells us to ‘develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform’. Now if we could just draw the attention of the current government to this?
