At the risk of repeating myself, it’s a great time for Hindi cinema! After the first big release of the year, Dedh Ishqyiya we can look forward to some more fresh, interesting, non-formulaic films that think out of the box or simply tell great stories. Here are some Hindi films that we can look forward to watching in the coming year:
Miss Lovely will release on 17 January 2014. This film starring the great find of recent times, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Sonu, Niharika Singh as Pinky and Anil George as Vicky is centered on C grade films being made in Bollywood. The seamy side of Bollywood devoted to the horror-porn genre of movies. The movie has already been screened at the Cannes film festival and other festivals and has received largely positive reviews.
Salman Khan fans have a reason to rejoice once again – Jai Ho releases on 24th January. The film, which sees the return of Tabu to Hindi movies after quite a while, is to be the remake of a hit Telugu film. Salman’s character is that of an army officer who quits the army and proceeds to implement a rather unique method of social change; as sort of chain of reform. We will presumably see a lot of action (read violence) and some characteristic Salman Khan moments in this film.
Recently Bollywood has recently done a terrific job with the Rom-Com genre and this is another promising movie in that genre: Hasee Toh Phasee starring Sidharth Malhotra as Nikhil Bhardwaj, Parineeti Chopra as Meeta and Karan Johar and Bobby Darling in special appearances promises to be funny, endearing and highly watchable. The chemistry between the firebrand Parineeti and the newest hunk on the block Siddharth should be well worth a watch.
Come Valentine Day, we will see the much awaited released of Gunday starring Bollywood’s most talented heartthrobs. The film is a period drama set in Kolkata, a story about two crooks and their love interest played by Priyanka Chopra. It will be an action-drama film – a bromance that recalls Sholay to mind.
Highway, slated for release on 21 February 2014 is another film that will be interesting for several reasons: it is to be a film about a road trip across 6 states of India. The Imtiaz Ali film stars Alia Bhat and Randeep Hooda and is described as a “coming of age film; a film about discovering oneself while traveling”. We will get to see whether the new Bhat on the block is able to pull off what appears to be a challenging role. A R Rahman’s music – including a song sung by the Nooran Sisters – will be another reason to look forward to the film.
Shaadi Ke Side Effects starring Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar is to be a film about the trials of tribulations faced by a married couple and more particularly by new parents. It isn’t just the rom-com variety of story that sounds interesting, the formidably talented lead pair and their chemistry will also be riveting to watch.
Finally Bollywood seems to be waking up to the fact that it is possible to make women oriented films and that is possible to cast female leads other than nubile nymphets. The trailer seems to promise a hard hitting story about atrocities committed against women and women’s rights. Gulaab Gang with Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla in the lead roles will certainly be one to watch out for. The release of the film is slated for 7 March 2014.
If the first edition of the move was anything to go by, we can expect a chilling sequel with Ragini MMS 2 as well. The movie will star Sunny Leone, Parvin Dabas, Sandhya Mridul, Soniya Mehra, Anita Hassanandani, Felix Sheikh. Releasing on 21st March 2014, this should be the film to watch out for in the sensual-horror genre. So these are just some of the films to look forward to in coming months of 2014.
