Broom was never an object of celebration before AAP made it its election symbol. After the predictable eclipse of AAP the broom got it rightful place in the remote political corner. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled it and attached the stick to it. He demonstrated its practical application on Gandhi Jayanti with a new message of Clean India – Swachh Bharat. The aggressive cleaning saturnalia was a tableau with a purpose and éclat.
Inspired with the chivalrous approach of Modi Ji, the top BJP brass went up for top gear drive. From Charbagh Station of City of Nawabs to Great Railway Station of Moghul’s Capital, from Patna to Bhopal, from north to south, from east to west and from top to bottom the broom had become the essential groom.
The wives of government workers felt obliged to massage the feet of their tired husbands after they returned from the unusual errand of sweeping the floors. It was a great change in nature of their sinecures hitherto they were habitual. From 9.30 AM, on 2 Oct, it was a new India – a clean India, a dream India.
The broom used by the prime minister changed the road-map and the destination of the nation or at least playing strategy for Nagpur politics for times to come. Till yesterday Mahatma Gandhi had been isolated as ‘Father of the Nation’ in the silent statues of stone in public parks or in photo frames in the offices of government and educational institutions.
His presence was ubiquitous on currency notes which nobody did really notice anymore. RSS hijacked the concept of Gandhi just from under the very nose of Congress Party. BJP made him the mascot of its public campaign. Unfortunately, Congress has not yet snapped out of its slumber even after of its small polls victories after the major defeat of Lok Sabha elections.
Now, granted that brand ‘Mahatma Gandhi’ is a national property but its effective ownership now belongs to RSS. It is another matter that BJP had to make a big U turn in this power pilgrim’s progress to own Gandhi.
The name Gandhi was always a bête noire for RSS. On 30 January 1948, Mohanlal, sorry Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi, and for most of his countrymen – the “Father of the Nation”, was shot dead by Nathuram Vinayak Godse, a Chitpavan Brahmin from Pune.
Godse was the leader of the gang that planned and carried out the execution of ‘Father of the Nation.’ The bullet that fell Mahatma was fired by Godse but others were also implicated in the assassination plot.
Godse was very close to Savarkar, a prominent leader of the Hindu Mahasabha and he did not, in that intervening period between his arrest on January 30 and his execution upon conviction ever disown his association with the Mahasabha. Godse had acted out of firm conviction that he bad been the defender of Hindu motherland against the depredations of Muslims.
Records revealed that he was associated with RSS but resigned his membership in the early 1930s. His younger brother, Gopal Godse was also convicted of partaking in the conspiracy to murder Gandhi and served a fifteen-year jail term. He did always speak in the most bitter terms of Gandhi as the betrayer of India. In Dec 1993, shortly after releasing Nathuram’s book ‘Why I Assassinated Mahatma Gandhi’ Gopal Godse gave an interview to’ Frontline’ magazine. He said, “All the (Godse) brothers were in the RSS. Nathuram, Dattatreya, myself and Govind. You can say we grew up in the RSS rather than in our home. It was like a family to us.
Is there anyone worth mention in BJP who is capable to distinguish between the ideology and the fundamentals of RSS, Hindu Mahasabah, VHP and Bajrang Dal? Whether Godse formally remained a member of the RSS is unimportant. The pertinent point is that Golwalkar and Savarkar share the distinct moral platform in BJP’s moorings today.
However, Sardar Patel’s letters leave no room to doubt that from his standpoint the RSS also stood implicated in Gandhi’s assassination, “The activities of the RSS constituted a clear threat to the existence of Government and the State. Our reports show that those activities, despite the ban, have not died down. Indeed, as time has marched on, the RSS circles are becoming more defiant and are indulging in their subversive activities in an increasing measure.”
Godse was an evolved Hindu extremist and RSS has yet to condemn him in commensurable strongest terms for his heinous deed. Gandhi was never the apple of the eye of RSS. But, everything is fair in war and love. You can change the adage as – everything is fair in pursuit of power and frenzy of hate.
To settle in power for a long time to come, they have already cornered Sardar Patel ideologically; they have been missing just by inches Lal Bahadur Shastriji and Narsimha Rao and minorities are already rendered as fly on the wheel. Gandhi is effectively and ideologically snatched away with a broom from Congress Party on 2 nd October 2014. The creeping political annexation is taking its toll.
While Prime Minster is making master strokes one after another with his Vikas Agenda, in the shadows of scaremongers of Hindu extremism, Congress Party is sleeping morbid undisturbed. Its Yuvaraj is missing the game. SoniaJi alone can’t salvage the flotsam. Priyanka Gandhi minus Vadra nimbus has to enter the room.
