I am not claiming that the technology or platform is anti-India as such. But one of the first hires (and a huge mistake by twitter in their India strategy) was the hiring of Raheel Khursheed as their India head.

For those not in the know, Raheel Khurshid is a closet kashmiri separatist, vociferously anti-Modi. And being of this tilt – it is certain that all subsequent hires in Twitter were mostly likely leftists with sympathies to the kashmir movement. No wonder then that Abhijit’s twitter account gets suspended but Shehla Rashid’s does not.

Raheel Khurshid’s self-written profile says

For Mercy Corps International, Khursheed executed a highly successful Participatory Planning Youth Leadership Project in Kashmir, where more than 700 Kashmiri youth received leadership and negotiating training. Khursheed then extended the training to key stakeholders, including law enforcement agents and political and business leaders in Kashmir. Khursheed is passionate about the intersection of technology and social change and speaks frequently at conferences and media outlets globally.

Basically , reading between the lines , he tried to engineer an arab spring in Kashmir. There should be no surprises how the separatist clan is so adept in social media – they have been trained by a senior member of Twitter.

Add to which – in Twitter the number of followers increase if one is verified. Also of importance is the number of followers of the people that follow you – this increases the visibility of a twitter handle and gives importance to the tweets much more than those who are unverified and who are not followed by people with large followings.

Is there any surprise that most separatists and India bashers have verified twitter accounts. Is there any surprise that Gowhar Geelani (the social media face of the separatists and likely heavily funded by Pakistan) and Mirza Waheed (a man pretending to be an author) are followed by Raheel on Twitter and re-tweeted often increasing the visibility of these two. Just read how Gowhar geelani praises Pakistan on his twitter handle – he is a clear Pakistan lover. Even worse – he (Gowhar Geelani) seems to be directing strategy in collusion with Pakistan and the separatists e.g When the Hizbul commander Musa came out with the statement on Jihad vs a Political movement – I suspect (it was too obvious) that Gowhar got the Hizbul to re-tract which he then tweeted – there seems to be perfect co-ordination and a social marketing (sic!) strategy in play here amongst the separatists (both armed and un-armed).

Its not just the Pakistani paid journalists like Gowhar Geelani or Mirza Waheed, its the imams of the mosques as well e.g. Mirwaiz umar Farooq and many others in South Kashmir – a twitter handle is better than any loudspeaker in spreading venom and radicalising the innocent minds! Why India does not arrest these imams in South kashmir for spreading communal dis-harmony is beyond me (possibly some sort of appeasement for votes ?) . In the US, they would have been sentenced to a hundred year life sentence and shipped to Guantanamo.

Of course on Twitter, Mirza Waheed and Gowhar Geelani follow other separatists and the fungus of separatism (and leftism – they are connected) grows as those profiles gain in importance.

This article is not about these clowns but is about Twitter. Part of the blame lies on us Indians. We forget that the freedom of speech (and its limits) is written in our constitution and not in the terms of conditions of Twitter. Twitter needs to follow Indian laws and not vice-versa. India needs to tell twitter which handles to close or if they are registered outside of India – which handles to not display in India purely from the perspective of National security.

Twitter has lots to loose. Note that China has its own version of Twitter and Facebook. Twitter is in India to make money and not out of any social service. Like in the US , companies that flout laws are fined hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions.

India should make it very clear to Twitter – follow Indian laws, cancel the accounts (on a continuing basis) that question our national boundaries and are separatist in nature, or face a billion dollar fine or even leave India – fear not they will be replaced within weeks by another Indian startup ! As mentioned Twitter needs India and not the other way around, Twitter needs to abide by Indian laws and not India abide by their terms and conditions.
