Indian Modern Art Sets A New Record A Christies

Recently a Francis Newton Souza painting – titled ‘Birth’ set a new record at the Christies auction in London.

The work was apparently owned by Tina Ambani (nee Munim) and permanently displayed at the Peabody Essex Museum prior to being re-auctioned by Christies where it sold for in excess of four million dollars (approximately 26 crores) and created a new record for Indian Modern Art.

Souza was the founder of the Progressive Artists Group which includes greats like M.F.Husain and V.S.Gaitonde (the previous record holder). After Picasso’s death Souza is reported to have claimed “Now I Am The Best“.

He is known for his distorted head paintings and for his nudes.
