The first day of the IPL auctions 2014 started off with a bang, much like it is the case with the tournament itself

The first day of the IPL auctions 2014 started off with a bang, much like it is the case with the tournament itself but by the second half of the day it had turned into a bit of a snooze with one player after another being rejected by stone faced franchisee representatives, who kept their hands firmly in their pockets. To put it into numbers, a total of 216 players were put up for auction today out of which 146 remained unsold, which means a staggering 68% of the players remained unsold. In the early morning session, all the franchises made some sort of splash in the market with marquee buys and the highlight remained the jaw dropping Rs. 14 crores that Royal Challengers Bangalore coughed up for Yuvraj Singh. Along with Gayle, A B DeVilliers and Virat Kohli, the RCB top order would be an intimidating one indeed with that addition.

There was drama early on in the day with Sri Lankan ace and prolific scorer in the IPL Mahela Jayawerdene going unsold after Murali Vijay had been snapped up by the Delhi Daredevils, in the very first tug of war between DD and CSK. However, the player that everyone had been waiting for was perhaps Kevin Pietersen, who is now available for the entire tournament and quite logically there was a 3 way battle for the player between CSK, SRH and Kings XI Punjab.  SRH came up with the winning bid but KP’s former team, the Delhi Daredevils, who had been watching the proceedings quietly, exercised their right to match card and snapped up the star for Rs. 9 crores. It was reported by IndiaOpines a few days back that Delhi was his most likely destination.

By the end of the first session, Dinesh Karthik had made his way to Delhi Daredevils for Rs 12.50 crores to become the second most expensive player in the auctions, while KKR used their right to match card to buy South African great Jacques Kallis for Rs 5.5 crores. Kings XI also made a bit of a splash in that session with clever buys for Sehwag at a cut price of Rs. 3.2 crores and Aussie speed demon Mitchell Johnson for Rs. 6.5 crores. CSK used their only right to match card for Faf du Plessis and got him for Rs 4.74 crores, as a result they could not stop Mike Hussey from going to MI for Rs. 5 crores. Brendan McCullum at Rs 3.25 crores seems to be a good enough replacement for Hussey as far as CSK is concerned. KKR meanwhile managed to buy back Shakib al Hasan and the biggest bargain was perhaps the purchase of Morne Morkel for Rs. 2.8 crores.

Those were the highlights of the first session but in the second session, there was hardly any action barring the bidding war for Glen Maxwell between MI and Kings XI, which saw the Australian go to the latter for Rs. 6 crores. The much anticipated auction of Kiwi all rounder Corey Anderson also took place in this session and after an initial bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians, Delhi entered the fray but stopped after the price pad gone up to Rs. 4 crores. Finally after a brief tussle between SRH and MI, he was sold to the Mumbai outfit for Rs. 4.5 crores. Post that, the auction was not as action packed as it was expected and it must be said that there were far too many players that were put up for auction. Brett Lee’s base price, for instance, of Rs. 2 crores was certainly an irrational valuation and although plenty of the unsold players might be put up for auction once again on the second day, according to the choice of the franchises, it is expected it would only be the uncapped players who will find takers.

Teams need to have a minimum of 16 players in their squad, so expect some of the teams to go in for plenty of uncapped players tomorrow to complete their squads.
