A profile of Lasith Malinga’s IPL career and performance as the star fast bowler of Mumbai Indians for the last 6 seasons leading the team to many a victory.

Lasith Malinga is without doubt the most lethal limited overs fast bowler in the world who has all kinds of possible deliveries in his tank that can bamboozle the best of batsmen into false strokes. In addition to that he has the pace as well to keep the batsmen honest whenever he comes on to bowl. On the other hand, his ability to bowl accurate yorkers at will makes him the ideal package for a winning T20 bowling attack and hence it is not really a surprise that he has been one of the stars in the IPL over the past 6 seasons for the Mumbai Indians.

Malinga’s brilliant fifer helps Sri Lanka clinch their 5th #AsiaCup title.
In his last 2 ODIs against Pakistan, #Malinga bowled 29 balls and picked up 8 wickets for 21 runs . Now that’s how a champion bowls!

Role

Malinga has dual role in the Mumbai Indians attack and that is perhaps one of the toughest things to pull off for any professional in a game that lasts for 20 overs. He is initially entrusted with the responsibility of picking up wickets during the batting power play in the first 6 overs with his quick, swinging deliveries and later on he is responsible for keeping things tight in the slog overs between 17 and 20. He usually bowls in 2 spells of 2 overs each but sometimes he is called upon to bowl one odd over in the middle if the batting side is moving along too rapidly.

Value

Malinga has only been a part of one IPL auction so far simply because of the fact that the Mumbai Indians have not made him available to others in the successive big ticket auction in 2011 and 2014. A player who is retained by his franchise twice over a period of 4 years is certainly an indication of the sort of influence he has on the team’s fortunes. When Mallinga was a part of the auctioning process back in 2008, he was bought by the Mumbai Indians for a relatively completive fee of $350,000. He earns substantially more nowadays.

Best Performance

Delhi Daredevils were the whipping boys in IPL IV but no one expected them to fold for 95 in a game against the Mumbai Indians and that too at home. However, when Malinga is on song then there is little the opposition can do and so was the case that evening at the Kotla as the Sri Lankan ran through the DD batting line up with his IPL career best of 5/13 off 3.4 overs of sustained aggression. Needless to say, he was awarded the Man of the Match award as MI cantered to victory in 17 overs.

The numbers returned by Mallinga are quite staggering if one takes into consideration the fact that he has played a substantial number of games in every edition of the IPL so far. A tally of 103 wickets, at an average of close to 18 and an economy rate of 6.54 is surely the stuff of a bowler who can win the game on his own for his team. In addition to that, it needs to be remembered that he has been consistent throughout and there has hardly been a season where he has been poor and that is the reason why he is feared by most batting units.

Did you know?

Malinga got married back in 2010 to Tanya Perera and the couple have a daughter. Malinga is a dutiful family man and he showed that when he decided not to participate in the lucrative T20 league in the West Indies since he wanted to spend more time with his family.
