A review of Pragyan Ojha’s IPL performace and career as on the top spinners for the Mumbai Indians. It was on the basis of his stellar performances that he was inducted into the Indian team.

Orissa spinner Pragyan Ojha has been one of the biggest success stories of the IPL so far. It was only due to his slew of brilliant performances in the IPL that he was inducted into the Indian team. Ojha started his career with the Deccan Chargers back in 2008 and was one of the key performers for the Hyderabad based franchise when they won the tournament held in 2009 in South Africa. Nowadays, he is a certainty in the star studded Mumbai Indians side and contributes quite consistently in helping the current IPL champions in winning games. He is a skillful spinner who has plenty of tricks up his sleeve and can contain batsmen as well with his clever variation of pace and trajectory.

Role

Although the Mumbai Indians have an excellent front line spinner in Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha still has a role to play for the Mukesh Ambani owned team in every game that they play. Hence, it is not a surprise that most teams are kept quiet in the middle overs when the two spinners are in operation. Additionally, Ojha can also bowl during the batting power plays, which is surely a plus considering the pitches in India that take turn from the first ball. He has the skills to be successful in a variety of situations and hence he is regarded as a vital member of the team.

Value

Ojha joined the Deccan Chargers as a domestic player and so he had to contend with the salary cap that was in place at the time, however it was a difference story in the auctions in 2011 when he had become an international cricketer. At that time, the Deccan Chargers bought him back for $500,000. However, the cash strapped franchise had to transfer him to the Mumbai Indians in 2012.

Best Performance

Pragyan Ojha turned in his best performance in the 2013 season of the IPL when he returned outstanding figures of 3-11 off a mere 2.2 overs against the Chennai Super Kings in the home game in Mumbai.  Although Mumbai Indians had only posted 139, they managed to skittle out the strong Super Kings side for a mere 79 runs to win the game. Ojha contributed brilliantly by picking up the crucial wickets of Mike Hussey, M. S. Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja.

There is hardly anything blemish in his bowling numbers over the past 6 seasons of the IPL and barring the 2012 season he has played in at least 10 games in all of the 5 other seasons, which goes to show that he is a player who is not dropped that often. An overall economy rate of 7.18, with an average of 22.69 and a strike rate 18.95 is surely the sign of a bowler who is at the top of his game. It is no wonder that he is regarded as one of the best bowlers in the IPL.

Ojha got married in 2010 to a girl of Oriya descent and her maiden name was Karabi Kailash. As a mark of his love for his wife, Ojha has customized the number plates of his Audi and replaced the original numbers with the date of birth of his wife.
