A review of Rohit Sharma’s IPL career and performance; currently playing as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, he has established himself as one of the most valued batsmen in the IPL- both monetarily and quality wise.

Rohit Sharma might have had an up and down career with the Indian team ever since he burst on to the scene but in the IPL he has been one of the most consistent performers and in fact a player who has repeatedly won games for his team. Rohit started off as a part of the Hyderabad based Deccan Chargers and was in fact instrumental in their triumphant campaign in IPL 2009 in South Africa.

However, in 2011 he was bagged by the high profile Mumbai Indians and he has continued in the same vein for the current IPL champions. In addition to that, he has also proved to be an excellent captain and played a crucial part in MI’s run to the championship in last year’s IPL.

Role

In the early years of the IPL, Rohit Sharma used to bat at number 5 or lower for the Deccan Chargers and his primary goal used to be that of providing the innings with a final push in the end overs, but his sound technique has now made him into a top order batsman for the Mumbai Indians. He usually comes in at number 3 or 4 for his current team and plays the role of the batsman around whom an innings is built. He is the one who is responsible for playing the long innings and then going after the bowling in the end overs. However, Rohit has successfully showed over the years that he can go after the bowling and stay at the wicket- both.

Value

Rohit Sharma has been a hot property in the IPL auctions right from the time the tournament started. In fact right after he had made his debut for India, the Deccan Chargers picked him up for an incredible $750,000. He repaid in kind with his performance but when he was released by the Chargers due to financial constraints, the Mumbai Indians moved in and bought him for a whopping $2 million in 2011. It is a testament to his brilliant performances and leadership skills that he was retained by the MI for the next 3 seasons.

Best Performance

Rohit’s  best effort with the bat came in the 2012 season of the IPL when he scored a seemingly effortless 109 (not out) off a mere 60 balls against the then defending champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. He hit 12 fours and 5 sixes to take the MI total to 182, which eventually proved too much for the star studded KKR batting line up.

It is often stated by cricket statisticians that ‘numbers don’t lie’ and in case of Rohit Sharma, that is certainly true since his numbers surely paint the picture of a remarkably influential batsman. A strike rate of a shade below 130 combined with an equally superb average of 32.63 surely makes him one of the most dependable batsmen in the IPL and it is not really a surprise that he has not been released by the MI.

Did you know?

Rohit Sharma was known to have a pretty flamboyant lifestyle in the past but he seems to have calmed down a bit in the past few years after getting into a relationship with British actress Sofia Hayat. However, according to the cricketer he is in no mood to settle down any time soon.
