A cousin of mine one memorably said that if Salman Khan did nothing except flex his biceps for the entire duration of a feature film, it would still be a hit. Meaning that his fan following is so unquestioningly steadfast and loyal, that it will accept pretty much anything from Bollywood’s Biggest Bad Boy. It follows that the scrutiny surrounding his next film is intensely avid. First named Mental, Salman Khan’s next big venture is now renamed Jai Ho.
Jai Ho (earlier Mental) – Slated for release 24 January 2014 (Republic Day Weekend)
Director – Sohail Khan
Producer and Distributor – Sohail Khan Productions
Story – A R Murugadoss (who also wrote the original Telugu movie)
Starring – Salman Khan, Tabu, Daisy Shah, Nadira Babbar, Bruna Abdullah, Diana Penty, Mukul Dev, Ashmit Patel, Yash Tonk, Genelia Deshmukh and debutants Sana Khan and Santosh Shukla
Music – Sajid-Wajid, Amal Mallik
Plot – Jai Ho (or Mental) is to be a remake of a 2006 Chiranjeevi starrer super hit Telugu film – Stalin. The Tollywood film had Prakash Raj, Sharada Urvashi and Khushboo in supporting roles. Salman Khan will be essaying the role of an army officer as Chiranjeevi’s character did in Stalin.
The story of the original Telugu film was to do with a war hero who quits the army. Disturbed by the suicide of a handicapped girl owing to the callous attitude of others, he devises a way wherein other people may help others. He creates a chain system of help – where, when one person helps another, that other person will not just express gratitude but will in turn help three other people. And so the chain expands to help more and more people.
Actress Tabu will be playing the role of Salman’s sister, a role earlier played by Khushboo in the original 2006 film. Nadira Babbar will play the role of Salman’s mother in the film. The film as faced several delays already – Sohail Khan has already delayed it by about 11 months, and it is now thought that we will see the release of the Salman starrer come January 2014.
When the idea of the film was first mooted, it was to have retained the original name Stalin, even for the Hindi version. This was then changed to the working title of Mental; as in Mental – For a Cause. For a while the rumour mill reported that the title Azaad that was being considered and now they seem to have settled on to Jai Ho.
Reportedly this last name change was done at the behest of Salman’s father, Salim Khan, who preferred Jai Ho to Mental. Jai Ho seems to be the final name for the movie since Salman Khan also promoted the film on Bigg Boss 7. Though there is still no trailer, or teaser trailer out yet for the film, we were informed that the first look poster and trailer of Jai Ho is to be released on or around 18th October.
There is also some speculation that the movie may be released in a 3 D format. The producer however is giving precedence to completing the film first and then considering what format it will be in. If the anticipation among Salman-worshippers is anything to go by, the movie is already a super hit.
