  1. The massive voter turnout in the first phase of the Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections was hailed by the media as a triumph of the ballot over the bullet. For the militants however this seemed to have been a signal to go on the offensive. These attacks, coming just before phase 3 of the elections seem to indicate as much.
  2. In as many as 4 recent Jammu & Kashmir terror attacks, military personnel, local civilians and police personnel have lost their lives. On Friday, 5 December 2014, armed militant attacked an army camp as well as a police check post. In addition there were grenades hurled at security personnel in three separate incidents as well as another incident involving a smoke grenade.
  3. JK terror attacks JAMMU & KASHMIR TERROR ATTACKSIn the terror attack at the Army’s Field Ordnance Camp located at Mohra near Uri, Lt Col Sankalp Kumar and a junior commissioned officer lost their lives. In the attack on the army camp at Baramulla, eight army personnel as well as 3 policemen lost their lives battling 6 armed militants, all of whom were eliminated. A police check post in Srinagar, Tral in South Kashmir and a police station in Shopian were the targets of more terror attacks. (Source – Zee News)
  4. Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhag arrived in Srinagar review the situation in the valley and to pay respect to the martyrs who lost their lives in the terror attacks. The Prime Minister has condemned these attacks; “Attacks in J&K are condemnable. They are desperate attempts to derail the atmosphere of hope & goodwill as seen by increased voter turnout,” he said via Twitter. (Source IB Times)
  5. Everyone, including the official line from the United States have condemned the attacks; however there has been no condemnation from the separatists in the state. Omar Abdullah has also referred to the attacks as “the desperate levels militants will go to disrupt peace and normalcy“.
  6. Using a strangely convoluted logic, Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP has blamed the media for these attacks, saying the high coverage of voting in the state has spurred the attacks. (Source – Times)
  7. Involvement of Pakistan in the recent terror attacks seems irrefutable. Food packets found on the slain militants were of the type used by the Pakistan army, said a senior Army officer. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has called upon the Pakistanis to control these incidents, saying if they cannot India can help. “I think Pakistan should try to stop these incidents, if they can’t, they should speak to India about it,” he said.
