The Republic Day floats at an event in TN featured Jayalalithaa’s portrait; proving that Amma remains the face of the government in spite of her conviction.

AMMA RULES BY PROXY Jayalalithaa On Tamil Nadu Republic Day Floats

  1. J Jayalalithaa is one of the most formidable of Indian politicians. Even now that she has been found guilty in the disproportionate assets case against her and sentenced to a term in prison, she is still the ruling political deity in her home state of Tamil Nadu.
  2. She may no longer be the Chief Minister of the state, but for her party, the AIADMK she is still very much the leader. For Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his ministers, Amma still rules as was evidenced in the Republic Day event in the state.
  3. The Republic Day floats at an event Presided over by governor K Rosaiah, prominently featured Amma’s portrait. This proves that Amma’s face and name remain the face of the ruling government in spite of her conviction. (Source)
  4. All 24 of the floats that appeared had the ex CM’s portrait on them. The only ones that did not were the ones from the armed forces and those from central government departments.
  5. The fact that it was Jayalalithaa and not Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s portrait that graced Republic Day floats has been noted by the opposition. The Congress has demanded action against the state government by the centre.
  6. Action can be taken against those who issued and followed instructions in creating those floats. But what do we do about the culture of toadyism and the attitude of servility towards the high and mighty in Indian politics. What do we do about those who continue to wield influence and who maintain their grip on positions of power even after they have vacated those positions?
