This is essentially sandy desert with few stony areas in between.It is spread over 3 states viz.Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana in western India.But 60% of desert area is covered in state of Rajasthan.
Location and Description
This plant is native of desert NW India and neighbouring countries. It is part of xerophytes group.This plant is not cultivated ,it has wild growth. The plant has slender appearance, grows to a height of 2.0 t0 2.5 mts. It does not have leaves, only leafless branches. It blooms twice in a year in January and November. It has beautiful flame red coloured flowers. During bloom time plant growth gives a very beautiful look to desert topography.
Traditional knowledge handed down over the years tell us that extracts of plant are useful in diseases like arthritis, rheumatism, inflammation, diabetes. This plant has small berry like fruits having pungent and bitter taste. After collection, fruits are put is a solution of curd ,water and salt for 7-10 days.
In this period bitterness is removed, then fruits are washed and dried. The fruits are rich in alkaloid fraction and found to be very effective in diabetes as sugar levels are reduced. In Indian house holds the fruits are also used to make spicy pickles and jams. Plant extract is also used as laxative, as astringent.
Recent researches by some botanists and pharmacologists in India have revealed that the plant extract contains fatty acid,amino acid, sterols, tocophenols
