In Karan Johar’s pretty, perfect, lavish, fantasy world, education is an other-worldly experience. The schools and colleges portrayed in Karan Johar films bear not even a fleeting resemblance to the common or garden variety of educational institution one is likely to find in India. Very frequently, the action is rather conveniently shifted to an appealing and somewhat aseptic foreign locale, but even it’s an Indian school or college campus being depicted, the resemblance to reality is tenuous at best. Schools and colleges, according to K Jo….
Not only is it a compulsory subject, your academic future will be decided by how well you shake a leg. Check out the ‘students’ in Student of the Year – not only are they perfectly coifed and turned out, they are amazing looking, and terribly cool and popular and simply wonderful!
The students have an amazing social life
They play American sport
The guys use friendship bands to ‘patao’ girls
Have kids that dress like THIS
Designer clothes are big in K Jo films. Everyone is perfectly turned out, have great skin and hair and have perfectly chiseled bodies. Whither the geeky, spotty student with the jhola, kurta and torn jeans? In a K Jo film? Perish the thought!
Students could be middle aged
SRK was already in his mid 30’s when he did Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai. But who can blame K Jo? We credulous Indian audiences have never had a problem with overage students. We lapped up 40+ Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots after all…
And just look at these students in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – super cool. But them having that good a time? Well we all did that in college… nostalgia time!
Even business school students are this cool!
My colleges were nice, but in K Jo’s alternative universe a school or college campus is pristine, beautiful and looks a bit like an American rom-com
The kids go to “Camp”
The teachers are exceedingly colourful
