Kieron Pollard has carved a niche of his own with his unconventional game play in the IPL.

He might have been called a ‘Non Cricketer’  by former West Indian great Michael Holding for his unconventional cricketing style, but Kieron Pollard is someone who is currently regarded as one of the most dangerous game breakers in limited overs cricket at the moment. He first came into prominence in the Champions League T20 in 2009 when he belted world class bowlers all over the ground and hence it was not really a surprise when he was bought by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL auction in 2010. Right from his first season, Pollard has delivered on the early promise of not only delivering consistently as a lower-middle order hitter but also as a slow medium seam up bowler. In addition to that, his outstanding fielding abilities make him the ideal T20 package.

The Role He Plays…

Pollard provides the Mumbai Indians outfit with a lot of flexibility due to his varied skills as a cricketer and usually his role is to go after the bowling in the end overs. Needless to say he does the job admirably well and in fact, it is because of his power hitting in the middle order that MI are able to post big totals at such a consistent basis. On the other hand, he usually bowls a full quote of 4 overs in the middle overs and although he might get hit once in a while, he usually picks up some crucial wickets or breaks dangerous partnerships.  It is not a surprise thought that he was retained in 2011 and also in 2014 by the Mumbai Indians.

 His Value

The day he played that innings against the New South Wales in the Champions League T20, Kieron Pollard was a marked man for all the good reasons and hence it was not a surprise at all that almost all franchises wanted to acquire him at the auctions in 2010. Eventually, it was a tie, but Mumbai Indians eventually acquired him in a closed door bidding session in which franchises are allowed to pay any amount of money they deem fit for a player.

 Performance Chart

Over the years Pollard has delivered stellar all round performances for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL but his best till date remains the 66 not out he scored off a mere 33 balls including 8 sixes and 2 fours against the Sunrisers Hyderabad last year. He scored the runs when the MI was chasing a steep target of 179 and Pollard’s innings made the whole pursuit look remarkably easy.

Pollard In Action

As a bowler, his best figures remain the 4-44 he took against the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2012 to wrap up the game for the Mumbai Indians. Needless to say he was adjudged the man of the match since he had also scored 64 runs in the Mumbai innings.

Pollard’s strike rate is simply out of this world when you take into consideration that he usually bats in the lower middle order of a team bursting with batting talent, however he is not a slogger who hits a six and gets out, which can be easily seen by the average of almost 26 that he has returned over the past 4 seasons. Pollard is well and truly an asset for the MI.

As mentioned earlier, Pollard’s economy rate is not something that the Mumbai Indians leadership would be happy about and the worrying trend is that it has jumped quite alarmingly in the last season to 9.41. However, his overall economy rate of 8.27 is offset by his penchant of picking up wickets, which is evident from his strike rate of 18.15.
