Sometimes the show is used to publicise a new movie and at others, good friends simply turn up for a chat. Then there are times when we see such strangely disparate individuals pair up on the show; that one has to wonder what’s going on. Episode 17 of Season 4, Koffee with Karan seemed to belong to that last mentioned – the guests were Zoya Akhtar and Rohit Shetty.
Whereas Zoya Akhtar has been involved with films that break the mould – films such as Luck by Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Talaash, Shetty has spun out formulaic films that veer dangerously close to mindlessness – he has given us films such as the Golmaal trilogy, All the Best and Bol Bachchan. One does have to wonder what two such very different seeming filmmakers have in common to appear together on a chat show such as this one.
Koffee with Karan – Zoya Akhtar & Rohit Shetty (Episode 17, Season 4)
Zoya Akhtar was introduced on the show as Karan Johar’s childhood friend and someone with a lot of movie mojo. Farhan Akhtar’s sister and Javed Akhtar’s daughter appeared on the show looking regrettably like her brother in drag and confessed that she liked dressing up just as much as any girl. Zoya spoke about the problems she encounters getting actors to get aboard her films, because she doesn’t do one-boy-one-girl films. (Good for her I say!)
We are introduced to Rohit Shetty whose first time this is on the show – he is introduced to us as India’s most commercially viable filmmaker, which gets one thinking – how is it that his is the brand of cinema that is most popular in our country. His plots are implausible, connectivity is usually an issue, the acting is always over the top, the jokes are plain silly at times – perhaps that is a discussion for another day. 4 of his films have crossed the 100 crore mark, so clearly he’s doing a lot of things right!
An episode of interesting contrasts
It isn’t just their films that are in sharp contrast – the personalities of the two guests also appeared very different as well. It was refreshing to see Rohit Shetty appreciating Zoya’s brand of cinema. His sanguinity, when he admitted that critics typically give his films 1 to 1½ stars was also entertaining to watch. Zoya ranted against critics for a while. Shetty’s laid back and relaxed attitude was in interesting contrast to Zoya’s angst about the perceived foolishness of media persons.
Where Zoya came across as forthright and someone who does not prevaricate about what she feels, Shetty appeared to make more measured comments and seemed more guarded. He did however give fulsome praise to Ajay Devgn – giving full credit of his success to the actor. Zoya spoke of Kareena Kapoor as being ‘funny’ – this was clearly not ha-ha funny, but strange funny – she spoke quite candidly about the star!
The rapid fire round with Zoya and Rohit
Zoya was very clear and unequivocal in her Rapid Fire round. She didn’t mince her words. She clearly likes Saif Ali Khan and said so. The fact that she had no problem speaking her mind on the show probably indicates her sense of security not only with herself but also position within the film industry.
Rohit was very quick to respond and he thought he was clearly the winner. Whereas Zoya seemed to be discussing a film with Karan, his was the genuine rapid fire round! He thought he was clearly the winner – especially since he had come all dressed up for the show! The winner announcement was however deferred to the last segment.
The cameos & the quiz
Farhan Akhtar, Abhary Deol, Tusshar Kapoor and Kalki Kochelin appeared on the show – they were very funny and tongue in cheek. Deepika Padukone, Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor who were also on the show simply came and spoke in glowing terms about Rohit Shetty.
Zoya accused Rohit of being cocky and a bully after which he was adjudged a winner. It was quite cute when Zoya said I cannot keep losing on this show – I hate losing! she said.
The dynamic between the two filmmakers was quite enjoyable – though they make such different films, they seemed to have really great camaraderie and had a lot of fun on the show. I myself enjoyed the show rather more than I expected to!
Here’s the full episode of the Zoya Akhtar & Rohit Shetty episode of Koffee with Karan. Zoya told Karan he needs a shrink, when he confessed to have watched Hum Aapke Hain Kaun 16 times. It’s that kind of episode – Enjoy – it was surprisingly good fun!
