This Asia Cup is proving to be the perfect platform for Virat Kohli, the potential new captain of Team India, to showcase his leadership skills to take over Dhoni’s spot in the current hierarchy.

People might well dismiss the Asia Cup as just another opportunity for India to steamroll their way to a championship on unresponsive feather beds in which run scoring is remarkably easy. Considering the sort of hitting power that the Indian batting line up possesses that might well prove to be true. However, the tournament has thrown up another sub plot that might well go on to have long term implications for Indian cricket in the near future.

Most of the readers who have followed the fortunes of Team India over the past few months would have identified the elephant in the room by now- the person who should lead Team India in the near future when Dhoni would no longer be the captain is now coming to the fore.

Enough of Dhoni?

M.S. Dhoni had to unfortunately sit out of this particular tournament due to an injury and in all honesty, the man does need a rest considering the fact that he is a captain, key batsman and wicket keeper across formats for a busy cricket playing nation like India. The results have been far from successful on the field for the team over the past few seasons barring the success in the ICC Champions Trophy win in England last year. Other than that, Dhoni has had routing success at home peppered with debacles abroad. The team recently returned from tours to South Africa and New Zealand without a single win under their belt, which certainly is a cause for concern and that is the reason why the temporary accession of Virat Kohli to the hot seat for the Asia Cup should be looked upon as a dress rehearsal for the job that should come to him at some point of time.

The Perfect Opportunity for the Perfect Candidate

Kohli is a proven leader, who has excelled in different formats including the manic tournament that is the IPL and even more famously he led the Indian Under-19 side to a memorable World Cup triumph in 2008 at the age of 20. He is the best batsman in the side by a distance and it is no surprise that he has been chosen as the captain elect by the powers that be in Indian cricket. The Asia Cup provides Virat Kohli with the opportunity of leading the team in a high profile tournament in relatively friendlier conditions and that is certainly a boon for him since he does not have to contend with the shock of another Indian shocking batting collapse…hopefully.

Kohli is ready for captaincy and the time that he has spent as the deputy of M.S. Dhoni must have helped him in honing his own skills as a leader, which is why it can be said that India could not have found a better time to give him a chance to lead the side. South Africa has sacked a fairly successful Shaun Pollock after the 2003 World Cup and made a young Graeme Smith the captain which eventually turned out to be a masterstroke; as a result India can well start to look beyond Dhoni if Kohli flourishes in the Asia Cup.
