India’s first genuine sci-fi and superhero film series will soon be returning with its third edition – after the highly successful Koi… Mil Gaya and its sequel Krrish, we can now look forward to Krrish 3, the 3rd edition of the Krrish franchise starring Hritik Roshan from producer-director Rakesh Roshan.
Ten years ago, Koi… Mil Gaya was a brave foray into uncharted territory but it reaped rich rewards by becoming the most successful film of the year 2003 and sweeping all the major film awards to boot. This first of its kind, Hindi sci-fi film was followed by its sequel Krrish, arguably India’s first real superhero film – with the special effects the stunts, the girl, the baddie, et el.

Indian Sci-fi films have come a long way from the 1967 Dara Singh starrer Chand Par Chadhayee and even from the lovable cult film Mr. India (1987). Though we have had films like Ra One, Robot, Love Story 2050 and Action Replayy – these Hindi sci-fi films have enjoyed success to varying degrees, and the Krrish franchise has clearly been a class apart. Krrish 3 was penned by Rakesh Roshan and then amended because it seemed too close to the story of Hollywood superhero film Spiderman 3, so we have some idea what to expect.
This edition of Krrish features Hritik Roshan as Krishna Mehra, same as the previous film (though he reportedly wanted to play the villain this third time around), with Priyanka Chopra as Priya Mehra his wife in the film.
This time Vivek Oberio plays the villain Kaal, and Kangana Ranaut plays Kaya, a mutant. Chitrangada Singh had earlier been offered the role of Kaya, and many other actresses were considered before Ranaut was finally cast for the role.
Other important roles are played by Shaurya Chauhan as the female villain, Arif Zakaria as a nuclear scientist. We see Rekha once again as Sonia Mehra in a special appearance, and Archana Puran Singh as Priya Mehra’s boss also makes an appearance. Reportedly Rakhi Sawant and Vrajesh Hirjee also have roles in the film.
In this edition of the film, Krrish’s character is everyone’s fave superhero and continues to fight against evil after defeating Dr Siddhant Arya (played by Naeeruddin Shah in Krrish). Rohit (Krrish’s father and Hritik Roshan in a double role) continues with his scientific research to help people.
While Krrish lives a happily married life with Priya, evil is being born in another part of the world in the form of Kaal, who is looking to spread death and destruction, while being abetted by a gang of dangerous mutants he himself has created. The ultimate showdown between good and evil is or course inevitable… meanwhile we also will see the interplay of familial loyalties being tested among Krrish and his family.
Something else about Krrish3 that made the headlines recently is that Amitabh Bhachchan was roped in to do the voice over for the film. Arguably the most distinctive and easily recognizable baritone in India, Mr. Bachchan will be introducing the character of Kaal (played by Vivek Oberoi) in the film. According to Rakesh Roshan this is important because it forges a connection between the three films and also introduces the villain.
Krrish 3 Trailer
The official trailer of Krrish 3 was released on 5 August and was instantly a huge success, getting over 2.3 million hits on the first day of release. It also subsequently broke the record for the most viewed video for a Bollywood film. The Krrish 3 trailer also broke records set by Hollywood flick videos such as Avengers 2 and Thor 2.
The Krrish 3 trailer features gravity defying stunts, spectacular special effects and liberal doses of the baddies who are seemingly also possessed of some superpowers – there is at least one bizarre creature with a scarily long tongue. We barely see a glimpse of Priyanka Chopra in the film and none at all, of the villain played by Vivek Oberoi. This apparently was a deliberate ploy to keep the focus on the protagonist Krrish – and perhaps to keep the audience in suspense?
