Only a few days back, a TV Channel was flashing a video of Kumar Vishwas praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi from the stage a few years ago with a contented and proud Modi looking at him as if he wanted to adopt him!
Vishwas is a poet besides being other things. But for someone who is known to have such a felicity with words (which is also his bread and butter) to praise Modi such effusively, saying that he was blessed by Goddess Saraswati was something bizarre.
All dictators are known to be very good orators and if Modi joins the gang it is not surprising. I am an-old timer by today’s standards and I was immediately reminded of such praise of Atal Behari Vajpayee by the late Jai Prakash Narayan.
When the two leaders were campaigning together against Indira Gandhi, JP told the audience something like this after his own speech- “I have said what I had to. Now he (Vajpayee) will explain to you things in his style because Saraswati resides in his tongue.”
Kahaan Raja Bhoj Kahaan…
So was Vishwas deliberately or sub-consciously trying to put Narendra Modi on the same pedestal as Atal Behari Vajpayee? But this is obnoxious by any standards.
Atal Behari Vajpayee garnered the respect of even his adversaries because of his flowery and gracious language and he maintained this style even after his incarceration in jail. I vividly remember his address to supporters at the Ramlila Ground after coming out of jail, which started with a couplet.
“Baad Muddat ke mile hain deewane, kahne sunne ko bahut hain afsane, khulee hawa mein zaraa saans to lelein, kab tak rahegi azaadi kaun jaane” sending the crowds into raptures. Not a word of bitterness, not a word of abuse for his tormentors.
Tavleen Singh writes in her book ‘Durbar’ that Vajpayee told her that he had composed the second part of this couplet impromptu. To attribute such grace to a man like Narendra Modi who takes jibes at his rivals by calling them ‘Shehzada’ and ‘kya yeh paise unke mama ke ghar se ayenge’ is a blot on the name of not Modi but Dr.Kumar Vishwas. I can only wish he was born earlier so that he would have understood what oratory really means.
Irresponsibility At Its Worst
However after hearing Kumar Vishwas at Amethi I don’t think it would have really mattered. A representative of the so called Aam Aadmi Party, a total outsider in Amethi, announced his intention to contest against Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by a convoy of SUVs and Sedans.
And in a language that should make Modi happy he tells the simple people of the constituency that Rahul and Priyanka are the ‘Bunty and Babli’ of India but he was a Brahmin and he would bring down the empire like his predecessor Chand Bardai.
It is time the well-wishers of Kejriwal to sack such irresponsible leaders like Kumar Vishwas and Prashant Bhushan from the party or ask them to join the BJP where they will be in royal company.
