After a gap of so many years, Ekta Kapoor finally comes up with a serial starting from “K” and this time it is “K for KumKum Bhagya“. Amidst, lot of reality shows, and crime detective series, we will now have inspiring story from the Balaji Pandora box making a space in our everyday lives. Let’s have a quick run on this latest offering from Balaji Telefilms.
Backdrop of KumKum Bhagya
Welcome in an all girls Arora Family where there is a mother (Supriya Shukla), bibiji (grandmother) and two sisters – Pragya (Sriti Jha) and Bulbul (Mrunal Thakur) who although love each other very much, are poles apart in everything.
While Pragya is the hardworking, sincere and practical girl. Bulbul is a dreamer and exactly opposite of Pragya. So, it is very obvious that Pragya is the elder sister while Bulbul, the brat is the younger one.
Now, there is no character called KumKum like I thought earlier. Actually KumKum Bhagya is the marriage hall which is run by Pragya’s mother and so the bread and butter of the family. The inaugural episode is the day of Pragya’s marriage.
She has said yes to an arrange marriage as she feels the guy has a similar viewpoint. However, to her dismay, when the sasuma comes with the baarat, she sees Bulbul and wants her as her son’s wife.
Yes, as ridiculous as that and the melodrama gets worse where the groom’s family ask the marriage hall as dowry. Now, do you think this agyakari and ghar ka sochne wali ladki will see this atyachar on her family? Of course not, and you guessed it right, she rejects the marriage.
The character of Pragya reminds me of Ekta’s earlier protagonist Kussum and Archana of Pavitra Rishta. If I’m not wrong both Kussum and Archana too faced the same situation in their life at a very early stage. Incidentally both these serials too aired on Zee TV at 9pm and let me tell you Pragya’s house is the same of Archana’s mayaka – the chawl house of Dombivili.
Other Important Characters
Ok, moving ahead, besides the Arora family we have other interesting ancillary characters as well. The first one is Suresh who is Pragya’s colleague in the college where she teaches. He is a replica of Shah Rukh Khan from the movie Rab Ne Banna Di Jodi. With a big spectacle, lose pants and similar scooter he comes everyday to pick up Pragya from her doorstep.
His looks, dressing sense and lack of style statement often invites lot of laughter from people especially Bulbul. Suresh is Pragya’s silent lover and it seems that Bulbul through his actions have already nalyzed his love for Pragya.
If you thought Suresh later becomes Pragya’s hero then you need too hold on because Pragya’s hero is Abhi, the rockstar (Shabbir Ahluwalia). Meanwhile, since Abhi is Bulbul types guy, we are introduced to him through Bulbul’s dream. In addition, we see Pragya kind of dislikes Abhi, the rockstar. Although, Pragya and Abhi are two opposite characters, how they meet, where they fall in love and when will their chemistry hit is something which I think is the USP of the show.
Rightly said by Ekta Kapoor in one of the interviews that there is nothing new about KumKum Bhagya. However, with Sriti Jha and Shabbir Ahluwalia’s popularity, I think this show will soon become a love story with fans trending Pragya and Abhi on Twitter, Facebook and where not. No wonder they look good together.
My only request to Balaji Telefilms will be, keep it crisp with tight story all throughout unlike the other serials where although you guys start positively, mess it big time when the story reaches midway. As far as the first episode of KumKum Bhagya is concerned, it is surely a thumbs up!
