The self righteous and cock-sure Chief Minister of Delhi is a strong willed person who is never willing to listen to reason.
There have been numerous instances to prove this. Anna Hazare realised this. Kiran Bedi realised this and chose the lesser evil by opting to support Narendra Modi even though she mocked all politicians from the stage two years ago and Binny is the last of his supporters to realize the true dictatorial traits of the man who is holding the whole country to ransom by threatening to block Rajpath on Republic Day if his demand for suspension of some officers of Delhi Police are not accepted by then. I urge him to try pulling the same stunt in Uttar Pradesh, or even lodging an FIR there!
Win-Win situation for Kejriwal
He knows he is in a win-win situation. If his demands are met, he will become more intoxicated by his new found power and if the Center refuses to concede to his demands, he will become an international celebrity by blocking the Republic Day parade for the first time in independent India.
The only sadistic pleasure they get is to embarrass the UPA but do they realise the implications of this? A duly elected Chief Minister of Delhi will have succeeded in doing what terrorists and insurgents have failed to do- block a program like the Republic Day parade which is an international occasion to showcase the military and cultural strength of the country.
Instead of conceding to his black-mailing tactics, the UPA will send a stronger message if it books him for sedition!
Delhi Police are no angels
This is not to say that all is well with Delhi Police. We journalists have spent our lives exposing the Delhi Police. We know much more than his revelations- they take haftas from rehriwallas, from shop keepers and from red- light areas. I remember a water- vendor, most likely from Daryaganj (if my memory does not fail me), who had filed a writ in the High Court to protect him from the cops who had been using him as a fake witness for years just because he had been caught in a petty act of stealing once.
So what is the solution? Hand over the Delhi Police to the Delhi Government which has rogue elements like the outlaw minister Somnath Bharti, Rakhi Birla and the temperamental Kejriwal? Not after watching his boorish behaviour ever since he became the Chief Minister.
Urgent need for police reforms
There is a need for police reforms but not for the Delhi Police alone. Having worked in several parts of the country I have come to the conclusion that in comparison they are one of the best behaved and transparent in their dealings for registering ordinary crimes.
Try lodging an FIR in Uttar Pradesh for a simple loss of driving license. You will be forced to write that you have misplaced it but you will not be able to mention that you have lost it because it reflects poorly on the thana! My new car was stolen from a small by-lane in Meerut at 4 am. But when I went to lodge an FIR, I was told that they would not be able to take any action till evening because their brief for the day was to protect the statues of Ambedkar from being vandalised. But this attitude of the cops exists irrespective of the government in power.
Maybe this will change when Brahmins like Dr. Kumar Vishwas take charge of Uttar Pradesh. I had written some time back that in UP and other states it is easier to commit a murder and get away with it than to register an FIR. No one has called this an exaggeration!
