The Swayamvar of Draupadi continues with lot of drama, entertainment and gyaan in the new Mahabharat. Check out how the episode enfolds here

The new Mahabharat, I do not know why, reminds me of three things – Bollywood movies, typical Ekta Kapoor daily soaps and 21st century modern day woman. While, today’s (5th February 2014) episode did not have any major daily soap stints, it surely made me feel like attending a seminar on Woman Rights and Empowerment.

Draupadi Swayamvar1 Mahabharat Daily Review: The Swayamvar of Draupadi Continues

The way Draupadi reminds Karna of his background and the way Drupad along with his son defend’s Draupadi looks inspired from a contemporary women’s dialogue often heard at various places – Looks like the serial makers have been warned by their female family members to portray things only in favor of women rights. Because, as far as the mythology is concerned, Draupadi only said she won’t put a varmala on a sutr putr. Again, her words came when Krishna instructed her to do so unlike shown here where both Drupad and Drishtyuman team up to give a lecture on women rights.

Another strange thing which I found was Duryodhan lifting the bow. Now, anybody who has even a slight knowledge knows Duryodhan did not had the potential to lift the bow which was kept in the swayamvar of Draupadi. However, here in the new Mahabharat he is not only shown lifting the bow but also trying to break it. Thank God, they did not show him breaking it because after watching the serial continuously I have a feeling that Swastik Pictures have the potential of showing anything.

Next, Arjun as a Brahman enters the royal palace and Draupadi recognizes him instantly and is relieved to see him. The eye contact between them is quite filmy, if only the song, “Mera Piya Ghar aaya” would have run in the background it would surely look like a good Hindi flick. This is again wrong portrayal of our legendary epic as no one knew if Arjun was alive or not, except Vidur, Pitama and Krishna. Draupadi waiting for him, meeting him in a temple and then wanting him to win the swayamvar looks like a modern plating to the real thing.

Nevertheless, Drupad announces that even Brahmans can participate. Let us see if Draupadi puts the varmala in Arjun’s neck tomorrow or not. You never know if they show Karna recognizing Arjun when he is about to shoot the arrow from the bow.
