Quotable Quote: When Sujoy Ghosh offered him the intelligence officer role in Kahaani, he said to him, “I am going to call my mother and tell her that I had finally met someone who doesn’t want to cast me as a beggar.”
He is no Hrithik Roshan or Shah Rukh Khan. He hates being called the next Irrfan Khan. He is a new anti-hero. He is everything that a Bollywood hero is not. He is a dark, lean man with chapped lips, a man who had learnt to dare the mirror. A man, who finally got his share of success after 12 years of struggle in the film industry. He is Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
As a farmer’s son from a small village Budhana in Uttar Pradesh, his options were limited when he decided to make a career in the industry. In 1993, he joined National School of Drama (NSD) and worked in theatre before stepping in Bollywood. His beginning was full of struggle. Nawazuddin played the role of dhobi ,watchman, and extras not only in the films but in advertisements as well. If you remember the Sachin ala re advertisement, he played the role of a dhobi in the background. Industry and media calls him a versatile actor today, well, this is the person who got the role of a tree in his first stage theatre. With arms upraised, he stood in the same position for around two and half hours.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui ‘s first break, was the Aamir Khan starrer Sarfarosh in 1999. Be it the role of a journalist in Peepli Live or Intelligence officer in Kahaani, he always managed to leave an impact. Chittagong, Dekh Indian Circus, Paan Singh Tomar, Black Friday and Bombay Talkies he has nailed it again and again. However, that’s not all. The Cannes International Film Festival has screened three films from India in the year 2012. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was part of two of these films, Miss Lovely and Gangs of Wasseypur.
For the actor who’s been struggling so long to get more than a couple of scenes simply because he doesn’t ‘look’ like an actor, the directors like Anurag Kashayp, Sujoy Ghosh opened the path and he got the roles that he deserves. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one of the busiest actors today. His fans will see him next in a Hindi film of Bengali auteur Buddhadev Dasgupta’s Anwar ka Ajab Kissa.
The man who had learned to dare the mirror, has a tale of rejection, redemption, and now celebration is moving ahead in life. From not so striking features, not being the hero material to setting an example, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has come a long way. But, as Siddiqui puts it, his career has just begun.
