Folks – our right to freedom of speech and expression is being watered down. Under the “guise of religious sentiments being hurt” and “comments that cause grief to the masses” the government is trying to stifle negative opinion on policy, politicians, and corruption. Well, simply put if you cannot make a good policy – you stifle any negative press , if you cannot control corruption or are corrupt or feel that scandals will make the government look bad – you stifle any news of these and so on.
Extent of Corruption – 2G Scam etc.
Where are we headed – far away from the democracy that our founding forefathers Nehru, Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, etc has envisaged. They were never corrupt and certainly would be “turning in their graves” to see the extent of the corruption. A five thousand crore irrigation scandal in Maharashtra and what happens – nothing !! 2G scam/3G scam/4G scam/5G scam – wait – there is only 2G scam – call me clairvoyant but it will happen.
Shri Kapil Sibal is a seasoned politician – he speaks in a very measured manner that cleverly usually amounts to nothing but soothes the situation at hand(hey, I am praising Mr Sibal for his eloquence – so please do not black list this post – did u see how he made the lok pal guys go in circles ?). He is also a politician of the older generation – so I can possibly forgive him for thinking the way he does. Attached are a couple of youtube video links for your listening pleasure.
Kapil Sibal On Internet Censorship and the clarification from mentioning what type of content actually was removed.
Mr Kapil Sibal contention that only religious comments were removed is exposed, where in fact 75% of the request for removal had nothing to do with religion or national security.
Note how it starts with religious sentiment and then to anything that is defamatory (against the politicians of course) !! Clever as always Mr Sibal. What is hard to get over/understand is Mr. Sachin Pilot’s (the Minister for Corporate Affairs) stand on this – is he just towing the government line – I cannot believe that what he says, is something he actually means. A link to his you tube is attached.
Sachin Pilot On Internet Censorship Law. To clarify , or for those to busy to listen to a smart guy speak gibberish – an important excerpt is below the video link:
Sachin Pilot: No, but what we are saying is, that if something appears and some individual or group of people bring it to your notice, that this is hurting my image, or my character or my sensitivity, please respond. So, within 36 hours, you say either we don’t agree with your views, we are still going to post it, or you take it out. If they don’t do that, then the individual has a right to approach the Court under the CrPC, IPC, IT Act. Here is what I’ve been asking them to do, my personal prestige, my sensitivity or my character is being tarnished or damaged, and the company is not taking any steps to remove it. You know, so many people have
come up to us, they have been hurt, or they have been put into a position of compromise.
Read Between The Lines – Fear For Our Democracy
“if you defame / disagree / criticize any thing in the government / any politician or policies the government will throw CrPC, IPC, and the IT Act at you” !! If this is not stifling freedom of speech then what is ?? This is extremely dangerous for a democracy like India. This is threatening the common man – the aam admi. Is this what the politicians want ? Wait , let me re-phrase my last statement – “THIS IS WHAT THE POLITICIANS WANT”
And then of course he sprinkles the above comment with “any comments that hurt religious sentiments / etc.” hiding the actual intent which is totally clear from his earlier comments. Before I proceed further I would like to add that my tirade is not against the congress, far from it – but they have been in power for a few years and have been crafting policies and are therefore responsible for it and have to face both criticism (constructive) and accolades for their actions .
Arunachal Pradesh / Our Borders
I am all for Sachin Pilot’s complaint that Arunachal Pradesh should be shown as a part of India on the web, but don’t in an clandestine manner (and using this as an excuse) remove complaints or disagreements from the web related to politicians or policies – isn’t that what politicking is anyways about (versus say group-think) – without this freedom we are heading towards being a failed state like our neighbour Pakistan.
