After watching Aamir Khan’s PK, people were reminded of Akshay Kumar Starrer ‘Oh My God!’ After all both the movies deal with similar themes – prejudices surrounding God, and misguided obsession with Godmen.
If you are thinking it is an original movie with no inspiration at all, let me tell you a background story and how PK was born.
Oh My God is an adaptation of a long running Gujarati play – Kanji Viruddh Kanji. apparently, director of both the movie and ‘play’ is same – Umesh Shukla. Now, Mr. Shukla has a close associate, playwright Saumya Joshi whose elder brother Abhijat Joshi works closely with Rajkumar Hirani. He is also the writer of Hirani’s two blockbusters – 3 Idiots and Lage Raho Munnabhai.
One fine day….
Saumya invited Hirani and his elder brother to watch Umesh Shukla’s play – Kanji Viruddh Kanji. Both Hirani and Abhijat, who co-scripted PK were so impressed by the play that they decided to make a movie on ‘merchandising’ God and Religion.
Soon the duo started writing the script for PK. However, they heard that Umesh Shukla, the director of the play is making a movie based on his own play. Immediately Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan offered Rs 8 Crore to stop the shooting of OMG.But, Oh My God was released in 2012 and PK got enough time to change the track of their script, though the original theme – ‘religion as a commercial’ enterprise was maintained.
People are boycotting and supporting PK over its theme, but little do they know that the only motive of the movie was hard-hitting the idea of religion as a commercial venture. But, the question remains – Why Hinduism? Because it is the most Tolerant Religion?
