In Brief

Rahul Gandhi belongs to one of the most influential political families in India. He is the vice president of the Indian National Congress, general secretary of the All India Congress Committee and also is a Member of the Indian Parliament who represents the town of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. Interestingly, Amethi has been a seat that has been represented by a member of his family for many years now and one of the most famous MPs from that town was his father and the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Recently his elevation to the post of the vice president of the Indian National Congress has meant that he is now being widely feted as the next Prime Ministerial candidate for the ensuing general elections in 2014.

Rahul Gandhi was born to Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi on 19th June 1970 in New Delhi, where he spent his childhood. He studied at the famous ‘The Doon School’ for a few years but after his grandmother and former Indian Prime Minister was assassinated in October, 1984 Rahul was educated privately due to security fears. He went to St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University but only studied there for a year before he moved to Harvard University in the USA. However, after his father was assassinated in 1991 he was forced to move to Rollins College due to security reasons and eventually completed his Bachelor in Arts in 1994. He also holds a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Cambridge in England.

Gandhi entered politics in 2004 and won the seat of Amethi immediately which was vacated by his mother. In his very first interview with the media he has stated that he believes in inclusive politics and seeks to unify the country and take it beyond the communal and caste based politics that is practiced by many leaders. In 2007, he was appointed as the general secretary of the Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India due to the fact that he many believe that he is a youth icon of sorts among the younger generation of the country. After Rahul Gandhi was inducted into the management of the Youth Congress, the volume of members has increased from 200000 to 500000 within a short span of time which proves his popularity with the youth of the country.

Before joining politics Rahul Gandhi worked for a consulting firm in London and currently he is a director of a technology outsourcing firm which goes by the name of Backops Services Private Ltd.
