Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat serial is on the verge of its leap where the Samrat has already declared his successor which happens to be his second son, Rajkumar Ashoka. Interestingly, he is also his favorite son and the offspring of his favorite wife. This obviously has not gone well with his first born Rajkumar Sushim, who always dreamt of becoming the next Samrat.
He is so agitated with the sudden change that he is being impatient. This is precisely when he plans to spike Ashoka’s mother’s drink so that she can drink it and even kill her own husband. However, he has no idea that his plan can backfire as going by what the sources have to say, it appears that Rajmata Helena will drink this spiked drink and spill all the evil deeds that she did in the past including her attempts to kill Bindusar at various occasions.
Now that Rajkumar Sushim has planned to kill his own father. Many of us have a question whether or not the real Sushim (in the history) too tried to kill his father Bindusar. Here we share few instances from the past to check the facts:
Rajkumar Sushim and Bindusar Shared a Cordial Relationship
The second Mauryan Samrat, Bindusar loved his first born Sushim. In fact, he saw him as a capable statesman. However, his cabinet of ministers and the Brahmin didn’t approve Sushim to be his heir as they feared if he becomes Samrat, their authority will be challenged. Moreover, he will not respect them. This is the reason why they together planned to make Ashoka, the next Samrat.
Ashoka was Samrat’s second born but wasn’t liked much by him. He was definitely not his favorite as shown in the serial. Instead, he avoided him and favored Rajkumar Sushim. This is the reason why Ashoka was also sent into exile after Sushim complained of Ashoka being arrogant and haughty post his victory in Takshashila.
Bindusar Wanted Sushim to Be His Successor
When Bindusar was ill, and counting his last days, he expressed his desire to meet Sushim. During that time, Sushim was not in Pataliaputra, he was busy in Takshashila’s administration perhaps in a fight against some rebellions. Samrat mainly wanted to see Sushim so that he could declare and crown him as the next Samrat.
Next, he asked Ashoka to go and handle the situation while Sushim could be back in Pataliaputra. However, all the Amatyas and cabinet of ministers could sense Samrat’s decision. They made the situation in Ashoka’s favor and made him act as if he is suffering from fever.
When Samrat Bindusar was breathing his last, they asked him to make Ashoka the temporary Rajkumar. However, Samrat Bindusar didn’t agree and he died. Next, Ashoka was made the Samrat and Sushim came to wage a war against him. Things really got awkward and Sushim was killed in this succession of throne. However, never did Rajkumar Sushim plan of executing his father as shown in the serial.
