While we all know about his achievements in this five glorious years, here we dig a little deeper and share some facts about his life before he became famous
Rajkummar Rao was born in a Lower Middle-Class Family in Gurgaon
Rajkummar Rao (earlier Rajkumar Yadav) was born and brought up in Gurgaon. However, the actor maintains the fact that he is not from the modern Gurgaon, full of ‘cool’ guys and gals, multiplexes and malls but from the small Gurgaon that once existed before Gurgaon’s makeover.
He came from a lower middle class family where no one had any connection with Bollywood. However, his entire family was Hindi movie fanatics.
He Grew Up Mimicking Bollywood Stars
When Rajkumar was a kid, he would mimic several Bollywood stars. For example, one day he would be Amitabh Bachchan from the movie Deewaar reciting the famous dialogue Tumhare Paas Kya Hai, and on the next day, he would simply become Shah Rukh Khan from the Blockbuster Darr and stammer KKKKKK KIRANNNNNN
Rajkummar Never Wanted to Become an Actor
Although Rajkummar Rao was very good at mimicking, he never thought of becoming an actor. It was only in his 10th Std that he decided he would take up acting as a career when he experienced an euphoric moment while performing on a theatre stage. Since, he knew he wasn’t good in studies and would never become an engineer or a doctor, he joined theatre.
Rajkumar attended college and simultaneously started doing plays in various theatre groups in Delhi. He used to cycle all the way from Gurgaon to Delhi to do his plays. No wonder, his passion for acting helped him overcome all his hardships.
He Graduated From FTII, Pune
Call it Rajkumar’s luck, the acting course in Films and Television Institute of India (FTII) restarted after 28 years in Pune. He shifted to Pune to study acting and graduated from the FTII in 2008. Soon after the course he shifted to Mumbai. However, the journey was not smooth, he had to face lot of hardships.
A Casting Director Once said to Rajkummar Rao that he wasn’t Fair Enough to become a Hindi Film Hero
After Rajkumar shifted to Mumbai, he started making rounds to various studios. On a daily basis, he met several casting directors. While, some told him that his eyebrow is not right for the role, others mentioned that he wasn’t fair enough to be a Hindi film hero. However, these mean wordings never bothered Rajkumar. He was confident that one day would come when a director would say that his eyebrow suits his character.
He even pleaded and begged directors to sign him for a film
While, now directors are eager to sign Rajkummar Rao, there was a time when he pleaded the casting directors to give him at least one chance. This is how he got a call for auditions for his debut film Love, Sex Aur Dhoka which was directed by Dibaker Banerjee and produced by Ekta Kapoor.
He is in a Steady Relationship with gf Anwita Paul aka Patralekha
Rajkummar met Anwita at FTII. However, the two connected well when one of the students had called them separately for a short film. It’s three and a half years now since they met and fell in love. 24 year old Anwita popularly known as Patralekha made her debut alongside Rajkummar Rao in Hansal Mehta’s CityLights.
