Born and brought up in Mumbai, Ranveer Singh harnessed a dream for acting ever since he was a child. He was an avid participant in plays and theater while in school. However, in college he shifted to concentrating on creative writing as he felt an acting career was unlikely. However, while he was in Indiana University pursuing Bachelors of Arts, he decided on taking acting lessons and this is where he realized that his passion lay in acting. Following his course, he came back to India and started auditioning for roles.
Singh has till date acted in three movies as the lead: Band Baja Baraat, Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl and Lootera. He has been seen in a cameo role in Bombay Talkies. His next movie Ramleela is slated for release.
He took away almost all the Best Debut awards for the year 2010. He has won a couple more awards since then, including a Best Jodi award with Anushka Sharma, Most promising Newcomer Award and the Superstar of Tomorrow Award.
Ranveer Singh had nothing less than a superstar’s entry into Bollywood. He was your typical loud and flashy masala movie hero. His uninhibited performance on screen and tongue-in-cheek responses off screen had the entire industry sit up and take notice of him. However, his journey wasn’t as much of a cake-walk like as it appeared on screen.
Ranveer Singh returned from the States in 2007 in the hope of bagging the lead role in a Bollywood film. Adamant on playing only the lead, he refused everything else that came his way. This led to a long struggle of three and a half years, before he got his first break in Manish Sharma’s Band Baja Baraat opposite Anushka Sharma. Being a novice in the profession, Singh was sent to stay at the Delhi University Campus to understand his role. After having read and observed several characters around him, he played the role with a flamboyance and precision that silenced all critics and won him a huge fan base. He went on to bag all the debut awards.
Following the success of his first film, Singh went on to do Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl, which failed to create an impact on the box-office. However, just when the actor was being typecast for playing similar roles, he went ahead to do Vikram Aditya Motwane’s Lootera. Ranveer Singh showed exceptional acting calibre and maturity in his role and went on to win critical acclaim for his portrayal of the conflicted con man. And now the nation waits holding its breath for his next release Ramleela directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, which promises to be his most impactful role till now from the look of the trailers.
Ranveer Singh might not be there yet where a superstar is, but he has all the qualities that take an actor to get there. He has the talent, the look, the charm and the drive. It will be interesting to see the path he charts for himself, the choices he makes and the challenges he faces. Here’s one actor whose potential the Hindi Film industry needs to explore and extract to its best possible use.
