Religious fanatics are creating havoc throughout the world. ISIS, the new breed of militants has taken birth recently, after the most prominent terrorist group Al-Qaeda was made silent due to continuous attacks and freezing of funds from US and its allies.
War is something which is not a modern day concept. If we jolt down history from the last 5000 years, we will find that there was rarely a time when the world was devoid of war and invasions – Sometime it was to acquire property in the form of man, material, and/or woman, sometime for precious items like gold, silver etc. and at times to spread religion. Religion was main reason for war and onslaught.
How Religion Took Birth?
There are not one but different theories and none of them satisfy the curious mind of the rationalist. On the other hand, the believers aren’t interested to know why. In simple terms religion is a code book based on the experiences of the then prevalent norms and behaviours. I would not say all of them lost their relevance.
For instance, In case of Buddhism, its most important tenet is to create harmony and piece among all living beings though non-violence in all form – Non-violence through deed, speech and mind to lead a peaceful life. Such a sermon was given by Gautam Buddha several years back which is duly codified in Buddhist text and is as relevant today as it was at the time of Buddha.
Religions have developed based on the requirement of specific geography, society, politics and economics. If we compare one religion with another there will always be conflict. While Buddhism preaches Non-violence, the people living at the shore of the sea cannot survive without killing aquatic animals which is food for them and the basic necessity of life. Space must be given to all kind of thinking whether we agree or disagree.
Killing occurred recently at a magazine office in France due to close mindset of some people. While humor is a major part of human life, a small caricature or cartoon cannot destroy a religion which is so old and grand in its existence. Even though if we disagree with something the option of peaceful protest is always open.
Today we are living in a globalized world where people are migrating from one place to another in search of good education, jobs and better prospects of life. Due care must be taken to adopt new culture in an alien land where language, people, society are completely different from the native land of a migrant. Just like India and US both are democratic country even though there is sea of difference between these two in terms of taste and preferences of people living there and here.
The only way to be peaceful in the changing world is to accommodate oneself in the new environment, otherwise there will be no respite in religious intolerance for a long time.
