We all have a problem of taking ourselves too seriously. Well, to make my point clearer, we ALL have problems. If you get slapped by a teacher, dumped by a girl, make a bad investment, or face any sort of a non-life-ending loss, a joke about your situation, allows you to see the funny side of things!
1. It can save you even If you fall off while collecting the Oscars!
What I mean to say is that it possibly couldn’t get worse than this! Jennifer Lawrence actually tripped while collecting her first ever Oscars. And guess what her sense of humor definitely saved the day for her.
It obviously won’t ease your inner pain, but externally, you look unshakeable, and others appreciate your strength when you bounce back and become successful in some way. Clearly, self-deprecating humor is required for you to deal with tough situations.
2. You become more likeable!
There is a huge reason why comedians are as famous as film stars today. Believe it or not, they’ve not publicized themselves as much as they have publicized their stories and experiences. They tell their own stories in hilarious ways that make us go ROFL!
Russell Peters admits to the fact that he was bullied all throughout his childhood because he was ‘brown’ in color. Today, most of his shows are filled with jokes about Indians and their funny ways!
And there’s a reason for that.
Vir Das makes fun of his love life, how he screwed up with his ex girlfriends in the most unique ways we can ever imagine! You think a heart ache is easy to recover from? Sarcastic harmless humour definitely helps!
3. You can never offend anyone around!
I have always viewed a large purpose of life to be laughing and making others laugh, as much as possible. If you want to be careful and not offend people, yet you want to joke, and are secure enough to put yourself down to make others laugh, self-deprecating humor is the way to go. Self-deprecating humor, if done in good taste, is incredibly funny.
4. People are more at ease with you
When you see a guy say something funny about himself, you know you can, in the future, make fun of him and not worry immensely about hurting his feelings. That gives you a level of comfort. Many a times, when you evoke humor amongst a group of people, it spurs an ‘us’ feeling amongst everyone!
5. Reverse Psychology!
Tell people that you are the best, and they will definitely hate you. Make them feel superior, and they’ll appreciate you. People seem to have a tendency to go the reverse way to what your words convey. Let me explain. If you insist that you have the intelligence of a slightly below-average guy, they think you’re being modest and funny, and actually believe you’re quite intelligent but like downplaying it.
6. What women want!
This is a universal truth: most women want guys with a good sense of humor! Thus, humor sparks romance! And men always want women who understand and appreciate their jokes.
7. You end up avoiding humorless people
By starving emotions people become humorless, rigid and stereotyped. And it’s best to avoid such people. Without humor it’s hard to look back at a situation in a brighter way and come to terms with it. Neurologists worldwide have concluded if someone doesn’t recognize sarcasm, he/she may lack higher cognitive skills!
8. Attention Grabber
Not many people are able to crack jokes on themselves, or tough situations they have faced. Not many people know that a lot of Bollywood stars also use self deprecating dialogues to amuse their audiences. Deepika Padukone in Chennai express makes fun of King Khan about him being 50 plus which becomes an instant hit in B town.
9. Fit in!
Is the main purpose in life to fit in? Not always, not when you are required to shine, but most of the time. Be a thoroughly ordinary, stupid, but secure guy on most days, fit in with every crowd, maintain every friend. And when the time comes to shine, shine dazzlingly. Amaze others with your ability in that crucial short burst. And just to keep everybody happy and not threatened, drop their armor at your will. Even if they know you’re messing with them, they’ll appreciate your confidence in making such jokes in the first place.
10. You make lesser enemies
Showing others your best is the worst thing you can possibly do. Sometimes at your workplace cater to egos, make a self-deprecating joke, and make them feel superior. It’s an incredible win-win. The listener feels superior in some corner of his mind, and you feel superior knowing that the listener is dancing to your tune.
