I have a grudge against Dhoni for many things. It starts from the long list of cricketers that have been shown the door from the likes of Ganguly, Sehwag , Gambhir , Yuvraj , Harbhajan and so on but somewhere down the line Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the crux of the Indian Cricket Team at the moment. During his helm, India won many ICC tournaments. Yes, I accept the current scenario of the team is bad but Dhoni retiring will only make it worse. We Indians can play the blame game very easily in this country just because we cloud ourselves with so many prejudices.
MSD is someone who is not only a finisher but also a calm influence in the dressing room. One day cricket of any form can be very stressful and we need someone with calm influence since Sachin, Dravid and VVS are not there. The entire BCCI is at fault regarding the poor selection and the monopoly played by Srinivasan and his ‘goons’ in the BCCI. MSD is at fault somewhere in all this but he never gave up despite the criticisms. A finisher, wicketkeeper and a stronghold of the middle order, MSD is needed to give a good finish or consolidate if the top order fails. He may give up his captaincy to Kohli in ODIs and T20s also but retiring is not a solution.
We criticize MSD just because he scored 0 today or couldn’t slog it when it was required but we always forget that how many times he has won us a match or bailed us out in times of deep trouble when early wickets fell. He is a human after all and is bound to make mistakes. The public memory is short-lived and thus we can only blame him for the loss. There are many aspects to why we are failing to bring good talents to overseas but though I’m not personally biased towards Dhoni, I do want him to keep playing this wonderful game until he thinks that he should call it a day.
