Popular stars including Shahrukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Arbaaz Khan and Govinda have been roped in by pan masala companies to propagated their products.
The stars who are out to make money by whatever means possible obviously have no qualms about advertising their products as these are some of the best paying organisations in the country. So much so that they are the sponsors of most star award functions.
Having failed to prevail over the star actors the Delhi Government has now decided to appeal to their wives to drill some sense into them.
A letter written to star wives like Gauri Khan says,”It is an humble appeal to you for encouraging Shahrukh Khan not to participate in advertisements of pan masala in larger public health interest.”
Similar letters have been sent to all the star wives since the stars have refused to respond to this, say Delhi government sources.
It is true that actors have been advertising for cigarettes, alcohol and similar intoxicants all over the world but in India they are expected to chose ethics over money, which is not really fair in this age of globalisation.
When Bollywood stars are making waves in Hollywood and now even the Oscar award giving ceremonies why should they be behind in advertising since they know that they are there only till the public tolerates them.
The pan masala lobby is really powerful in this country. They have been peddling the story that their products do not contain tobacco or nicotine and hence consuming pan masala is not dangerous.
But the letter sent by the Delhi government tells the better halves of these stars that even if they do not contain tobacco they contain Areca nuts (supari)’which also causes cancer, according to scientific research.
