Every day we wake up to read in our newspapers and magazines of another scam or scandal in our country, every night we go to bed having watched the television scream the same news. Corruption is everywhere across all strata of our society.
What does corruption do to our country? On the political front, corruption is a major obstacle to democracy and the rule of law. Economically, corruption depletes national wealth. Socially it brings apathy against the Government and environmentally it gives a free hand for industry to destroy, degrade and deplete our natural resources.
Transparency International, the global coalition against corruption releases its findings every year on how corrupt a country is. In the results for 2014, India ranks as number 85, with a corruption index of 38. Clubbed along with us are Zambia, Thailand, Burkina Faso and a few other countries too.
The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A country or territory’s score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
Here is a collection of quotes and cartoons that sum up what corruption is and what it has done to us.
Thankfully the common man is still optimistic!
